Four goal haul for Cockburn’s Patterson

Report by Jessica Woolcott

Rory Patterson scored four goals in a first-round game of the PS4 National Premier Leagues season to lead Cockburn City to a 5 -1 thrashing of Inglewood United at Inglewood Stadium on Saturday.

It only took until the 11th minute for Patterson to open the scoring with a header, before being played through by Conor Kavanagh on the edge of the box for his second in the 14th minute.

Patterson completed his hat-trick in the 56th minute, and then sealed the deal for Cockburn with his fourth in the 75th minute, after a through ball by Harry O’Brien.

Patterson was as pleased with the team performance as the goals, although he was clearly disappointed with conceding.

“(We) got a few goals and we’ve won well, and played well on top of that,” Patterson said.

“(We were a) bit unfortunate with trying to keep a clean sheet (and) that’s going to be be important for us this year.

“But obviously the three points is what matters most.”

Kavanagh and Patterson have already developed a good partnership up front with Kavanagh providing the assists for Patterson’s first two goals.

Patterson returned the favour in the 65th minute with a superb back heel for Kavanagh to slot in to make it 4 -1 in Cockburn’s favour.

Inglewood substitute John Thornley managed to score a consolation goal in the 90th minute, as the home side struggled throughout the game to match Cockburn’s intensity and pressure.

With a handful of new signings during the off season including Kenny Keogh, younger brother of Glory striker Andy Keogh, and last year’s golden boot winner David Micevski, Inglewood had high expectations for the game.

New Inglewood coach Michael Garcia said he was ‘lost for words’ at his team’s performance.

“It was hugely disappointing,” Garcia said.

“We’re definitely going to have to sit down and watch the game again, reassess our line-up and the players within the group.

“If we need to make some changes this early on, we might have to.”

Cockburn take on Floreat Athena at home next week in a rematch of the Night Series grand final, while Inglewood will look to improve their form when they play Perth Soccer Club at Inglewood Stadium.
