Four star Stirling impress against Glory

Report by Helene Lambetsos

Stirling Lions added to their string of wins after a 4-0 defeat of Perth Glory at Inglewood Stadium on Saturday.

The Lions defeated Sorrento in last weekend’s round two clash against Sorrento and went on to defeat ECU Joondalup in the Westfield FFA Cup.

The hosts scored two goals in each half and controlled possession throughout a peformance that pleased Lions’ coach Rob Milevski.

“The boys worked hard all week, especially coming off playing on Saturday and obviously backing it up on Monday with the FFA cup,” he said.

“They (Glory) were a man down. We told our team to keep calm, keep possession and as the time progresses they’ll be desperate and will keep pushing numbers forward.

“It was a big task for the lads today but they’ve done a great job.”

The Lions started slowly, but Milorad Vujacic’s screamer on 23 minutes was too powerful for the goalkeeper, and in turn gave Stirling more belief to push on.

Seven minutes later Brodie Martin doubled the lead from a corner after reacting sharply in the penalty area.

Glory Youth’s hopes of mounting a comeback were dashed when Joseph Knowles was sent off just before half time for a poor challenge.

But the Lions’ would not make the same mistakes against Balcatta, which saw them throw away a two goal lead, as they held their nerve throughout the second half.

The home side pushed numbers forward in the hope of pulling one back, but Stirling made the game safe on the hour mark thanks to Lawrence Shuruma.

And Robert Petkov wrapped up the win for the visitors with an excellent fourth goal on 84 minutes.

Stirling will look to continue their run of form against Night Series champions Floreat Athena in round four.
