Perth claim points in wet conditions

Report by Adrian Klein

Subiaco showed signs of improvement after a heavy round one defeat, despite a 2-0 loss to Perth SC at a wet Dorrien Gardens on Saturday.

Thumped 7-1 by Stirling on the opening weekend, Subiaco were far more resilient against Perth but goals from Reece Vittiglia and Matt Milenkovic were enough to settle the contest in the home side's favour.

Perth assistant coach Marc Wingell said poor weather conditions had made for a tight game.

“Eventually our quality on the ball, especially up front took its toll and we got the win,” he said.

“When we needed to react and create a couple of goals we did.”

Perth goalkeeper Francis Soale was called upon in the 14th minute to make a great diving save from Carlin Feely's free-kick from just outside the box.

Subiaco had another attempt in the 25th minute with a good low cross from Daniel Milne but Subiaco striker Ian McMurray could not get anything on it.

A breakthrough came in the 32nd minute with Vittiglia getting on the end of a through-ball that came through the middle of Subiaco’s defence.

It took just 10 minutes after the restart for Perth to find the back of the net with Vittiglia’s shot being parried into the path of Milenkovic, who headed it in.

Tensions were high with promising signs for a Subiaco come-back in the second half with Soale working hard to keep a clean sheet.

Subiaco captain Nathan Diaz said that his side battled hard but didn’t get the result they wanted.

“A few mistakes cost us a lot,” he said.

“We were in the game the entire time, we had enough chances but we just weren’t clinical enough.”

A late challenge in stoppage time on Perth’s Rocco Pizzata sparked some controversy, resulting in a yellow card to Subiaco’s George Tchami and Ryan Montgomery.

Perth’s Wingell said that it was a perfect result for his side today putting down to a great team performance.
