Boi scores last minute winner in Floreat win

Report by Adrian Klein

A last minute goal from captain Ludovic Boi earned Floreat Athena a 3-2 win over Balcatta at Grindleford Reserve on Saturday.

The visitors 2-1 down at half-time but rallied to score two late goals to secure the win.

Boi said his late winner had been fortuitous.

“I had a bit of luck and I just popped it at the right time to put it away,” he said.

“It was good to get the three points. I’m glad for the boys.”

Floreat coach Glen Grostate said his side’s superior work ethic paid off in the end.

“We felt like we deserved it,” he said. “We changed a lot of things, we pressed hard and it paid off.

“At the end of the day we had a game plan, we fought for something, and when we fight for something we fight hard.”

Floreat opened the scoring when Blair Govan's header was stopped by goalkeeper Clint Davies but only as far as the crowded penalty area before Jonathan Stynes found the net.

Balcatta equalised in the 39th minute as Floreat goalkeeper Jason Saldaris slipped over before Anthony Bafobusha converted a cross.

Six minutes later Allan Carroll gave the hosts the edge as he got his head on the end of an excellent corner taken by Zelfy Nazary.

Floreat equalised in the 77th minute after substitute Andrew Scaldaferro found the back of the net from a poor corner clearance which gifted him the ball just outside the box.

In the 90th minute Boi took on several players, played a one-two to get in the box and buried it to secure the victory for his side.

Balcatta’s Marc Anthony felt the conditions and some referee decisions had played a part in his side’s loss.

“The conditions were rubbish,” he said. “I don’t think it was a fair result. They were very physical and that’s fair enough. They've got a lot of big boys in there.

“We didn’t let that get the better of us though and we stood up to it, but some of the decisions should’ve gone our way instead.”
