Breakers News February 2015

Financial Turnaround of MDBA:

 #          $85,000 + profit June-December 2014.

 #          $150,000 + profit projected for the full 2015 year.

The Committee of Management [COM] is delighted to advise of the fantastic news that MDBA has been turned around financially.

In May 2014 a completely new Committee of Management [COM] was elected. Those involved came in knowing the club had financial challenges. Secretary and CPA, Martin Scanlon, undertook an extensive review of business along with Treasurer, another CPA in Lyndsay Baczyk. COM approved a number of changes that are now reflected in the above figures. Furthermore we have also been able to pay the $35,000+ in improving both service to families and facilities for the players, coaches and umpires and still return the profit level in the 6 months June-December 2014. We now have in place:-

  • Gas adjustable backboards goals on all courts providing for players of all ages;
  • Computer scoring tablets and system. Currently being launched;
  • New web site and communication system. To be launched week of February 26th.
  • Direct Debit. EFTPOs available in the office, canteen and uniform shop.
  • Air conditioned umpires room and expanded storage was completed last month

It is pleasing to note that 30% of Breaker families chose Direct Debit payment system and the level of appreciation provided by the convenience of EFTPOS. A record was also set when 100% all Breaker players paid for 2015 within 2 weeks of registrations opening.

The financial position is an exceptionally pleasing outcome and provides the foundation to plan confidently for an accelerated growth and further initiatives COM has in place in the interests of our “Player Focused - Coach Supported” program.

Moving forward with Certainty and Confidence

COM’s responsibility is the BIG PICTURE and SECURING a STRUCTURE and SYSTEM that provides for CERTAINTY, one focused on player development and coach/umpire education. The intent is that every initiative WILL improve the program for the players.

 Program Manager

 #          Growth of programs. Increased service. Improved planning and communication.

COM has approved the employment of a Program Manager. The tasks associated will be determined over the next period before advertising the position and making the appointment. Fair to say no one wants to experience again what occurred during Try Outs.

A major focus will be the establishment of an annual Calendar. COM wants to eliminate last minute events, tournaments or training changes etc being thrown at members. Families are very busy and MDBA must get better at programming well in advance so everyone can plan.

Up to now far too many tasks are completed by volunteers. We can now transit these volunteer duties to an employed position and provide a greater service to the members

 2015 Coach and Player Development

 #          $80,000 Coaching Budget of which $20,000 for volunteer coach education

The current COM came into office on the drive to ensure dollars were allocated to coaching. Without a budget there is no education or support for those who volunteer to coach the players. We were able to maintain the Coaching Director’s position via $35,000 donations/sponsorship and fundraising together with personal guarantees.

The aim was to ensure the required funds for player development and coach education could be generated through normal trading. Funds coming through donations etc must be treated as a bonus. This has been achieved and the personal guarantees no longer required.

For 2015 COM has budgeted in the order of $80,000 for coaching. This is a 4 x fold increase on the $20,000 the previous COM were able to allocate.

Coach education programs will be made available for both Domestic and Representative coaches. Wherever possible the coach expertise will be brought to MDBA so as many of our coaches can attend.

The intent is for coaching budget to be fixed and locked away for all future years.  It will be seen to be the key of MDBA's program success; one member’s will not want removed or compromised.

Loan Repayment

 #          Budget for an annual lump sum payment

MDBA has a reasonable sized loan associated with its capital contribution to build the stadium. Budgeting for an additional annual lump sum payment to pay out this loan quicker is also a major priority.
