Due to poor weather conditions, Canberra’s first grade AFL teams have got off to a slow start, with only four out of the seven sides actually playing a game, making it increasingly hard for the new teams in the competition ADFA and ANU to show the competition what they are made of.
ADFA had an unfortunate start to the competition, losing out to the Tuggeranong Hawks by 39 points, whilst the ANU side didn’t have a chance to play, with their game to the Belconnen Magpies being called off due to the wet weather conditions.
So far, the First Grade division has only taken part in two games, one of which saw a surprising result with last year’s Premiership winners Ainslie going down to rival club Eastlake by eight points.
All AFL Canberra games were called off again over the weekend, making the anticipation for this weekend’s games even higher. Whilst ADFA are up against the Queanbeyan Tigers this Saturday, who finished second from the bottom of the ladder last year, ANU is going to have to wait another week to play as they have the bye this coming weekend.
Anu’s head coach, Josh Cliff states that the circumstances this year have put his team at a disadvantage.
“We have had two practice matches but the last one was about a month ago so the boys haven’t really had any game time. We are not the only team that haven’t played but with having the bye this weekend, it means we have another week of no footy” Cliff said
Cliff also mentions that there is a lot of frustration around the club at the moment.
“The boys are all very frustrated that we haven’t played a game yet, but at the end of the day it’s out of our control. They are looking forward to the game against the Hawks in Round 4, they are just looking forward to actually playing”.
This weekend will also see Belconnen play Ainslie, who they lost to in last year’s Grand Final by 28 points and Eastlake versus Tuggeranong.
The first grade competition should be a tight contest this year, with the older teams all after the win, as well as the new sides wanting to prove themselves in the competition.
