Tuggeranong Hawks Women have had a big month of celebrations, with more celebrating to come this weekend, with the Hawks celebrating the 10 year anniversary since their first premiership in 2004.
A small function will be held after the Hawks vs Molonglo game at Greenway this Saturday commencing at 12pm, with a formal function to follow Saturday night at the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Club from 6.30pm. Tickets for the night function are $50 for a three course meal, please RSVP to eugenie.hickey@health.gov.au ASAP.
The Hawks kicked off a month of milestones with Katie King playing her 50th Tuggeranong game against Belconnen. The next three games have seen some Hawks' stalwarts reach their 100 game milestone. Bek Currie played her 100th against ADFA, Tia Stevens the next week vs Eastlake, and co-captain Karen "Buzz" Hill vs Gungahlin.
Bek is one of the many Hawks soccer converts. She was convinced to come across from the round ball game by team mates in 2005. Bek is a member of the 2007, 2009 and 2013 Hawks premiership sides, having 2008 and 2010 off from football to give birth to her boys Lucas and Daniel. Bek is a tough and consistent performer and is an integral part of the Tuggeranong backline.
Tia also joined the Hawks in 2005. Like Bek, she has also had time off from having her girls Morgan and Linley, in 2008 and 2011. Unlike Bek, Tia has suffered numerous injuries throughout her football career, most of which she has battled on through, usually without anyone knowing. Her 100th would have come much sooner had she not severed her hand in a game vs Belconnen early this season.
After surgery, stitches and some more time off from football, Tia finally got to that allusive 100 game milestone. Tia is a 2007, 2009 and 2013 premiership player. She is the perfect utility player which makes her vital to the team. Tia commenced her career at fullback and has played in just about every position on the field since, and plays it well. She is now known to sneak a few goals from the boundary, and is a fantastic switch option into the ruck.
Buzz commenced at the Hawks in the premiership year of 2004. If she could be kept away from basketball and travelling, she would have reached her 100 game milestone a lot sooner. Buzz has a plethora of football awards to her name, including multiple club B&Fs, a Mary Bainrot medal (league B&F), ACT representative and member of the ACT women's team of the year. Buzz is the current premiership co-captain at the Hawks, and also has medals from all 5 of Tuggeranong's women's premierships, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2013. Buzz is arguably one of the best women's onballers playing in the ACT, and has been a fundamental part of the Hawks midfield for the best part of a decade.
There are now 10 members of the Tuggeranong Hawks women's 100 club, with all but one of those has played football for the Hawks this year. This demonstrates the loyalty players show to the Hawks and is one of the main reasons the team has been so successful since it's inception. All going well Rona Rich should also hopefully play her 100th Hawks game by the end of the season.
Congratulations to the newest members of the Tuggeranong 100 Club.
