The neutral territory of Football Park will host one of the most anticipated games of the year this weekend when fist placed Ainslie take on second placed Belconnen.
By Aaron Palazzo
The game was originally meant to be played at the Magpies home ground, The Nest, however due to recent weather the surface has been deemed to be unsuitable to play on.
The last time these sides faced off, fans were robbed of the opportunity to see a fast paced and highly skilled game of footy due to the shocking wet weather.
Nevertheless, Ainslie eventually ran out winners 6.9 (45) to 2.7 (19).
However, this time around the stakes are much higher for Belconnen.
If the Magpies were to lose this weekend they will likely find themselves outside of the top two, jeopardising their opportunity at a second chance come finals time.
A sound loss to Queanbeyan last weekend could also have a negative effect on the players’ confidence, especially coming up against another strong opponent.
Ainslie on the other hand are coming into September nicely.
Off the back of another convincing win, the Tricolours won’t be underestimating the Pies, but will be quietly confident they can get the job done.
Conditions are expected to be wet again on Saturday, however not as severe as it was last time these sides met.
Wet weather footy should suit the Magpies, if it’s a low scoring game and they can manage to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal they’ll be in for a very good chance at an upset.
A top of the table clash at this end of the season is always exciting, so get down to Football Park this Saturday at 2:15 to see these two premiership contenders go at it for the last time in the home and away season.
