Toea Wisil yesterday became the first Papua New Guinean to win an Australian Athletics title when she won a closely contested 100m final in Sydney. After comfortably negotiating the first round on Friday in 11.65 seconds and registering a quick 11.47 secs in the semi final, Wisil held off a strong challenge from Ashley Whittaker of Victoria to breast the tape in 11.49 seconds from Whittaker (11.53secs) with Margaret Gayen of South Australia third in 11.83secs
Hopes of a double for Wisil were however dashed by Monica Brennan who saved her best for the 200m final which she won in 23.41 seconds. The PNG girl appeared favourite after being 0.3 of a second faster than anyone else in the semi finals where she clocked an impressive 23.53secs.
