In Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Finals action today, it was wins to Sandringham and Box Hill Hawks.
A strong second term helped Sandringham eliminate Collingwood from the VFL finals, while it was the name McEvoy - Ben & Peter - that kicked six goals between them to help Box Hill Hawks to the Preliminary Final stage of the finals, leaving Port Melbourne to have to progress from the Semi Finals.
Let's take a look at the results today in the VFL Legendairy Finals:
Seniors
Sandringham survives another week
Sandringham has set up a Semi Final berth against Port Melbourne with a 26-point win over Collingwood at Victoria Park. Kenny Ong was the unlikely goal kicking hero for the Zebras, finishing with four goals as they hit the front in the second term and were never headed.
Sandringham trailed by four points at quarter time despite having more scoring shots than Collingwood. The Zebras took control of the game in the second term, with Ong adding his second and third goals for the game to give the Zebras the lead in a five goal to nil second term. Until that stage Ong was the only goal scorer for Sandringham, but that quickly changed as Matt Kreymborg, Darren Minchington and Trent Dennis Lane each added their first to see the Zebras lead by 22 points at half time.
Kyle Martin got the Magpies off the best start possible in the third term, but they were struggling for options and accuracy up forward. With Collingwood back within 16 points, Sandringham set up its win with and three goals in a row to Adam Cockie, Ong with his fourth and Sam Dunnell to jump out to a match high 36-point lead.
A late Collingwood goal saw Sandringham carry a 31-point lead into the final term, but both teams struggled to find the goals in the final term, which suited the Zebras in the lead. Dunnell finally broke the drought in time on, as Collingwood kicked eight behinds in a row before Collingwood kicked its first goal of the final term just before the siren to see the Zebras victorious by 36 points.
In was no surprise Ong was best for Sandringham with his four goals, and was joined by Minchington, James Munro and captain Cockie.
For Collingwood it was all single goal kickers, with Nick Riddle in defence, Martin in the middle and Blair in the best.
Box Hill earns week off
Box Hill Hawks have earned a week off and a Preliminary Finals berth after a 24-point win over Port Melbourne. After a tight first half, the Hawks kicked away in the third term with the tall timber of Ben McEvoy and Sam Grimley proving the difference between the two teams.
After Box Hill claimed the early lead in the first term, Port Melbourne bounced back to take the quarter time lead by 11-points, with three in a row to Chris Michaliades, Tom O’Sullivan and Julian Rowe.
Despite Ben McEvoy kicking his second to open the second term for the Hawks, Port started to find its forwards as they quick had a 24-point lead with Adrian Bonaddio and Dan Connors getting on the scoreboard. Peter McEvoy helped Box Hill back into the game in his first senior game of the season, but it was left to joint Frosty Miller Medal winners Grimley and Connors to trade goals late in the term as Port held a 12 point lead at half time.
Grimley and B.McEvoy helped Box Hill into a lead they would not relinquish in the third term, as the Hawks opened the quarter with the first four goals. Bonaddio answered for Port, but James Sicily pushed Box Hill out to a three goals lead late in the term. A late long bomb from the wing by Hugh Sandiland who had been moved forward from defence got the home side within 13 points at three quarter time.
Box Hill turned it on in the final term, with the first three goals moving them out to a 25-point unassailable lead. With a four goals to two final term, Box Hill Hawks gained a Preliminary Final berth, while Port Melbourne will face Sandringham in a Semi Final match next weekend.
Kyle Cheney was resolute in defence for Box Hill, while the likes of Alex Woodward, Sam Iles and Mitch Hallahan matched it with the powerful Port midfield.
For Port Melbourne, Connors and Bonaddio kicked two each, with James Magner, Marcus Davies, Sam Pleming and Marcus Marigliani in defence were the best for the Borough.
