The J.J. Liston Trophy awards night will take place tonight .
The night will reveal the best and fairest player in the Peter Jackson VFL, and will also announce a number of other award winners through the evening.
Identifying the winner of this year’s J.J Liston Trophy winner is no easy task.
Looking at season 2014, the top four teams are likely provide plenty of candidates for the J.J. Liston Trophy title.

Port Melbourne’s Toby Pinwill has been the name on everyone’s lips in the second half of the season, with the Borough only suffering the two defeats for the season. The last time Port finished as minor premiers - in 2011 - they were also able to boast the Liston Trophy winner in Shane Valenti, so will the same trend continue tonight.
Pinwill will have plenty of competition for votes in the star studded lineup, with Chris Cain, Mitch Wooffindin and maybe even Dan Connors in his late season goal kicking surge his main competitors.
Footscray has a number of AFL listed players that are sure to attract the umpires’ attention, with VFL veteran Brett Goodes impressing this season at VFL level, along with Tom Campbell the ruck and Lin Jong in the middle. Captain Nick Lower has had a great year, earning himself VFL State selection, so could be the best chance of the VFL listed players.
Williamstown boasts a number of players that have attracted the umpires’ attention in previous years, with the likes of Adam Marcon, Ben Jolley and Kane Lambert likely to be in the umpires eye, with Scott Clouston leading the goal kicking and Nick Meese feeding the midfield sure to be in contention.
The midfield grunt at the Box Hill Hawks has helped them to another VFL Preliminary Final, with last years’ winner Mitch Hallahan and fellow Hawthorn listed player Alex Woodward regularly among the best for the Hawks, along with Kyle Cheney and VFL listed Sam Iles. With depth in the tall timber department, will ‘Frosty’ Miller goal kicking winner Sam Grimley be able to take the attention off the men winning the ball in the middle?
The latest media favourite in recent weeks has been Collingwood’s Kyle Martin. With 27 goals for the season, Martin only played the two AFL games and has struggled not to be in the best players for the Magpies on a weekly basis throughout the season.
Werribee’s captain Jarred Moore was a constant in the club’s best this season, with ben Warren sure to attract some attention with his 34 goals this season, along with Mason Wood with 30.
A midseason resurgence by North Ballarat is sure to earn some of its players valuable votes, with North Melbourne listed Liam Anthony a constant in the Roosters best, along with the Nick’s of Couch and Rippon.
A number of young players on the Sandringham list are sure to attract attention, with Kenny Ong and James Munro leading the charge this season, along with captain Adam Cockie.
Can Geelong go back to back in the Liston? Jordan Schroder again has seen plenty of time at VFL level, or could it be a VFL listed player like Jackson Hollmer that attracts the votes?
For Essendon, captain courageous Ben Duscher has again been their standout, but the likes of Leroy Jetta and Anthony Tipungwuti have also been in the best regularly.
In a disappointing season for the Northern Blues, Nick Graham was a shining light, earning his a regular spot in the Carlton lineup by seasons end which will cost him in the count.
Richmond captain Ross Young was a regular in the best for the Tigers, and Anthony Miles showcased the AFL form he is currently in at VFL level early in the season, but can he poll enough to set the challenge for other players in the competition after he cemented his AFL spot mid year.
Frankston boasts a number of young stars, and all eyes will be on Ben Cavarra to see whether he can do the Morrish/Liston double. Fothergill Round Medal winner Nic Newman is also sure to attract votes for the Dolphins.
Coburg too boast a plethora of young talent, with new forward Lech Featherstone leading the way and the likes of Adam Saad and Ozgur Uysal taking their game to the next level this year.
Casey only attracted the five wins this season, so it might be difficult for them to produce the Liston winner in 2014, but the likes of Max Gawn and Sam Blease have dominated at VFL level throughout the season.
Without a win in 2014, Alik Magin was a mainstay for Bendigo in the best, with captain Steve Stroobants also a regular.
