Day One of Easter Championship - Review

Last night marked the opening night for the 2014 Basketball Fiji Easter Championship. It was an exciting night at Vodafone arena as teams came together to compete for the prize of $2000 and honour of Easter Champions for 2014! Of the games last night, two featured prominently. Spectators watched Suva Association’s champions, Saints, take on the Raiwaqa Association’s mighty Warriors; and many people stuck around to see the New Caledonian team SS1 in action as they took on Suva’s New Era.

M- Saints (53) vs. Warriors (30)

Warriors put up a good fight, but the Suva Champs were too strong. Putting up five successful three pointers in the first half, Saints took the lead early on and proved too tough for Warriors to catch up. In the final quarter, the Raiwaqa Warriors got into a good rhythm with Joshua M putting up a few threes of his own, but unfortunately it was too late. [Saints: William (14points), Blake (10points), Warriors: Joshua (16 points), Joka (8 points)]

M- SS1 (27) vs. New Era (21)

Many spectators were interested in this game as our international guests took to the court for the first time. The game started out slowly with the scores a low 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and remained low throughout the game. Both teams excelled defensively, but SS1 demonstrated why they were top of their home club competition as they pulled together during the second half and came out on top. [SS1:), Y. Paul (7 points), T. Roriedo (5 points), New Era: Francis (5 points), Leroy (4 points)]

W - Golden Bati (39) vs. Wesley Stripes (41) – Double over time

The surprise of the night was in the Women’s competition in the rematch between Raiwaqa Association’s Golden Bati and Wesley Stripes. Having lost to Golden Bati in club games, Wesley Stripes had something to prove. They fought hard, taking the game into doubleover time in order to come out victorious. First, Stripes’ Lani hit both her free throws with only seconds to go in order to bring the scores level; then, on the buzzer, Stripes’ Vere put in the basket that took them into second over time. Golden Bati played hard with Talica giving the team some much needed points, but unfortunately for them, this time Wesley Stripes took the win. [Golden Bati: Talica (16 points), Emele (8 points), Wesley Stripes: Lani (19 points), Alice (4 points)]
