Basketball takes on HIV outreach

BASKETBALL Fiji has teamed up with the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee's Stop HIV and NCDs program for the Easter Championships that began yesterday.

The tournament is being held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva and the program is the first for the year. FASANOC Stop HIV&NCDs project officer Jeegar Bhavsar said the comprehensive outreach program would target all 31 participating teams, officials and spectators.

He said the outreach would also include the visiting team from New Caledonia.

Basketball development officer and Stop HIV champion Laisiasa Puamau said the partnership is in line with the objectives of the tournament in providing awareness programs to participants in regards to making the event more than just about competitive participation.

"It is good to have the Stop HIV&NCDs team as a partner advocating on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and NCDs during the event," he said. "The Basketball Fiji slogan, 'It's more than just basketball', is a testimony to the partnership."

This year, the FASANOC Stop HIV&NCDs program, with support from ONOC, World Health Organisation (WHO) and Ministry of Health, is looking at expanding to include advocacy on the prevention of NCDs through sports and looks forward to working with other national federations.
