Day Two of Easter Championship - Review

Day two of Basketball Fiji’s Easter Championship was underway last night at the Vodafone arena and proved just as exciting as day one. Raiwaqa’s Mighty Mights brought in a loud crowd as they took on Suva’s Idaman and the young Iconic Reds gained some experience on the court when they took on Day One’s stars the Wesley Stripes. However, the real upset of the night went to Boston Red versus Bryce. These Raiwaqa rivals went head to head in a defensive one-point difference match.  Meanwhile, the western associations have started playing some of their pool games in Lautoka in anticipation for Thursday where they will make the trip to Suva.

W – Iconic Reds (23) vs. Wesley Stripes (34)

The Iconic Reds are a development squad from the Raiwaqa Association. Even though these girls are young in both age and experience, they demonstrated last night why they are more than worthy of the chance to compete in the Easter Championships. Iconic Reds took on Round One Winners, the Wesley Stripes, and were only 4 points down at half time. However, even with the 17-point star effort of Reds player Lice, the Wesley Stripes were too strong and came out on top with an 11 point win. [Iconic Reds: Lice (17 points), Mati (4 points), Wesley Stripes: Alice (14 points), Leilani (13 points)]

M – Mighty Mights (20) vs. Idaman (28)

The loudest game of the competition last night was the battle between Mighty Mights and Idaman. Mighty Mights drew in a very vocal and supportive crowd from the hills of Ed’s Court in Raiwaqa, demonstrating the real community atmosphere that surrounds basketball in Fiji. At half time, the scores were one point difference, and again at three-quarter time. However, in the end Idaman pulled together and came away with the eight point win.  [Mighty Mights: Mesu (7 points), Jordon (3 points), Idaman: Koli (14 points), Semesa (10 points)]

M – Boston Red (17) vs. Bryce (16)

The most competitive game of the night was easily Raiwaqa Association’s Number 2 team taking on the Number 4 team. Having played against each other many times in the past, spectators were surprised to see Boston Red come away with the one point win. With only seconds remaining and the scores even, it looked as though the game was going into overtime. However, Boston Red’s Etuate scored one of his crucial free throws taking the scores to 17-16 and awarding Boston Red the win for the night. [Boston Red: Etuate (6 points), Tupe (4 points), Bryce: Tim (6 points), Joeli (3 points)]
