Taito works on team unity

FIJI under-19 Women's Basketball team captain Grace Taito believes that unity and team work is an essential weapon for her team at the upcoming Oceania Youth Championship in Australia later this month.

While she regarded the opportunity of being captain as the best in her basketball career, Taito says unity and team work could help the side produce results.

"I think this is one of the best opportunities so far while representing Fiji. I have played previously but to captain the team I think it is not a small thing but a huge responsibility and I am honoured about it," the 18-year-old said.

She said most of the girls would be making their first outing for Fiji at Oceania level.

"Some of the girls, it will be culture shock competing to this event because some will be going to represent Fiji for the first time. We are preparing well not only physically but also mentally."

Taito represented the Fiji U19 team while she was 14 years old in 2008. She missed out in 2010 because of injury.

"This is my second trip to the Oceania Youth and one thing that I found out is that when there is unity the team will do well. So I have been telling the players to work together especially our team bonding. I want us to be close to each other in terms of relationship as this will help us on court," Taito said.

"We are planning to organise some activities to help our team bonding," she added.

Fiji is drawn in Pool Two with Papua New Guinea, Guam and New Zealand.

The Laisiasa Puamau-coached side is wary of the unpredictable Guam side in its opening pool match on November 25.
