Anna Tuiaea-Ruud Basketball Coaching Clinic Hits the West

The Basketball Outreach Program, led by American’s Anna Tuiaea-Rudd, has now reached the Burning West and is making great progress. Those running the program include Anna Tuiaea-Rudd herself, her husband, Jason Rudd, Ms Amber Johnson and Mr Kwan Johnson. Included are Laisiasa Puamau, Fiji Basketball Development Officer and former National Basketball Reps Mereleini Tora and Etuate Waqairawai.

The Clinics started on Tuesday, with the team visiting schools in Lautoka. They visited St Thomas High School, Natabua High School, Ba Pro and Tilak. Lautoka ended with a coaching clinic for officials from the Lautoka Basketball Association and a 2 hour training session with the Namoli Basketball Club.

The program is set to cover most schools in Viti Levu, including schools like Xavier College in Ba, Ratu Kadavulevu School and Queen Victoria School in Tailevu, Adi Cakobau School in Sawani, Latter Day Saints Church College in Tamavua and Nasinu Secondary School in Nasinu.

In addition the group will be running coaching clinics for interested teachers, basic offence and defense drills for secondary school students that are eager to learn something new and will be working with teams that are preparing for the upcoming National Easter Basketball Tournament.

Despite all the excitement and the progress with the program there is the hot and humid weather the West is known for.

"Everything is good. The only drawback is the humidity and the hot sun as most of the courts are outdoor courts that do not have cover, “says Mr. Puamau.

Basketball Fiji’s Development Officer Laisiasa Puamau also acknowledged the US embassy in Suva and the great people of America for funding the Basketball Outreach Program which is anticipated to reach over 3,000 students around Viti Levu.

This program has made news, for schools in the Central Areas as schools are calling to confirm their reservations with Basketball Fiji as they realize that gaining such an exposure will be a great benefit for the schools and students.

The program will end in Suva, the 27th of March, where our visitors will observe and assist in the running of the National Easter Basketball Championships.
