Basketball aims for top three

Fiji Basketball men’s and women’s teams aim to finish in the top three positions in the International Basketball Federation(FIBA) Oceania Championship in New Zealand this week.
National head coach, Laisiasa Puamau said they would be entering the competition with one aim and that was to finish with the best teams such as Australia and New Zealand.
“This will be a challenge to us and our aim is to go and compete and finish in the top three positions. We know we have Australia and New Zealand and other Pacific island teams who will be hard to beat but it will be a challenge to us.
“To finish in first or second position will be a bonus to us,” Puamau said.
Puamau also stated that the two teams have prepared well and there were no injury worries in camp.
“All the players are looking healthy and fit. There are no injury worries in the teams and our players are also working on recovery plans.”
The National Sports Commission gave $30,000 to the two teams last month to help with their airfares.
“We thank the National Sports Commission for this kind donation and also our corporate sponsors like Colgate Palmolive for providing us the toiletries, Coca-Cola Amatil for bags, Tee-shirts, caps and Powerade drinks.
“The Pearl Resort for providing us a bus which will take us from Suva to the airport, McDonald’s for providing on the day of our departure and also Pure Fiji and Jack’s Fiji,” he added.
Meanwhile USA -based Mikaelar Whippy will join the team in New Zealand on Wednesday.
The completion begins this Tursday and ends on December 3.
