League Women Round 1 – Palmerston Power v Tracy Village Jets

The reigning champion Tracy Village Jets got their Challenge Season off to a bright start with a 58-47 win over the Palmerston Power. Tara Maxwell led the Bombers from the outset with a team and game high 19 points. Backing her up was last season’s MVP Sam Rioli with 15 and Tahnee Maxwell with 10. The Bombers trailed 11-10 at the first break, but pulled back in front in the second quarter with a 16-11 run for a 26-22 half time lead. They then opened up the game with a 21-10 third quarter that put them on the track to victory. Steph Pye stood out for the Power with 12 points with Christine Cooper adding 9.

Eagles v Lightning

Michelle Friel potted a game high 28 points to lead the Eagles to an easy 67-39 win over the Lightning. Friel was hot from the get go, knocking down 11 of her total in the first quarter as the Birds built up a 20-12 advantage. By half time the score was 40-27 as the rest of the Eagles began to add points to the score line. Yasmin DeCurtins put up 13 points for Lightning with Ashlee Walsh chipping in with 10, but they were no match for the Birds on the night. Lillian Williams hit 16 and Patricia Graham had 15 in support of Friel.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Four players hit double figures for the Uni Rebels as they easily accounted for Ansett 67-30. The Rebels pounced on the Blues in the first quarter with a 17-8 run and then put a cap on the Blues basket in the second quarter as they held them scoreless during a 19-0 run for a 36-8 half time lead…end of game. Tamara Sheppard led the Rebels with 15, Kahlisha Rioli had 14, Danielle Ponter hit 12 and Jaylene Bonson added 11. Chelsea Cook hit a team high 13 for Ansett.

League Men – Palmerston v Eagles

Palmerston knocked off the Eagles 75-60 behind a 36 point scoring effort from gunner Jesse Bell. The Eagles led 34-31 at half time due to a solid team effort. After the major break Palmerston stepped up their offense and powered off on a 30-18 run in the third quarter to turn the game in their favour. Bell continued to fire away while team mates Ben Muvirimi (10) and Aaron Simpson (12) began to make their presence felt on court. The scoring dried up for the Eagles in the second half as Palmerston forged ahead for the win. Jessie Williams-Hook top scored for the Eagles with 22 and Justin McKey hit 10.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett overwhelmed the Uni Rebels with a 107-44 blow-out to open their account for this competition. The Blues charged out of the blocks with a 23-12 first quarter run and never stopped till the final whistle. The Rebels didn’t stand a chance against the onslaught by the Blues. Six players hit double figures with Daniel Florance leading the way with 22. Jake Feeney (18), Cameron McKenzie (16), Matthew Hunt & Ross Vasic (15 each) and Mitch O’Donoghue all got into the act for Ansett during the game. Young Lance Schmidt proved to be best on court for the Rebels with a team high 18 points.

Lightning v Razzle

Lightning staged a fourth quarter fight back to win a squeaker against the Razzle, 63-60. The green and gold look like they were going to break a long losing streak when they led 56-45 after three quarters of play. They hit a purple patch in the third with a 23-10 run to give them the lead, but it all fell apart in the last quarter when Lightning struck back with an 18-4 run to snatch the victory. Cameron Bailey led all scorers with 28 points while team mate Tom Godwin hit 16 before fouling out of the game. David Carroll led a full house of double point scorers for the Razzle with 14.
