DBA League Results – Thursday & Friday 28/29 July 2016

Round One

League Women – Thursday - Ansett v Eagles

The Eagles claimed the first win of the DBA Championship Season with a stirring 48-45 victory over Ansett in the opening game of the competition. In the early stages of the game the Blues had built up a 23-16 lead through the efforts of Erin Boyd and Clancy Dorman who peppered the hoop from inside and outside the three-point arc. After the break the Birds swooped back into contention behind the sharp shooting of Meredith Collins and Molly Althouse. They piled on 18 points to just 5 for the Blues to take a 34-28 lead into the last quarter. Dorman and Amelia Short hit quick baskets to begin the fourth quarter and it was game on until the last minute when Collins from the Eagles broke a 45 all tie with a free throw to put the Birds up by one point with 53 seconds left and then Trish Graham sealed it with a basket with just 20 seconds remaining. Collins and Kristina Martinson had 12 each for the Eagles with Molly Althouse on 11 and Whitney Althouse on 10. Dorman had a game high 17 and Boyd finished with 15 for the Blues.

Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

The defending champions Tracy Village Jets opened up their account by thrashing the Razzle 123-34 and sending out a message to the rest of the League teams. No mercy was shown as the Bombers blew the Razzle away behind the shooting of Kylie Duggan (30) & Sam Rioli & Tikesa Docherty-Cole (27 each). A 30-8 scoreline after one quarter of play was a big indication of how the game was going to be played out and the Razzle had no answer at all. Others to hit double figures for the Jets were Erin Geer with 14 and Danielle Totham with 12. This was the 17th straight victory for the Jets.

Palmerston Power v Uni Rebels

Palmerston capitalized on a 21-7 first quarter run to dump the Uni Rebels 61-38. Brittany Ward hit 24 for the Power and Rebecca Thorne had 23. Jaylene Boundry & Chantelle Lee had 13 apiece for the Rebels.

Men

League Men – Thursday – Ansett v Eagles

Ansett’s new import from South Bend, Indiana, USA, Jerron Jamerson, lit up the scoreboard for 40 points in his debut game for the Blues as they slipped past the Eagles 93-82 in the opening Men’s League game of the Championship Season for 2016. The 6’2” shooting guard showed his ‘game’ to those watching and the Blues camp would be happy with the results. The final result wasn’t a runaway win for the Blues, they had to work to stay in front of the Eagles, but they did manage to put the points on the board when needed. The Eagles were ahead 71-68 with 6:38 remaining in the game, but the momentum then shifted to the Blues who held the Eagles scoreless for over 3 minutes while adding 11 to their total to take a 79-71 lead with just over 3 minutes left. Supporting Jamerson were Brad Davis (15) & Freddy Webb (14) while for the Birds Joseph Johnson hit a team high 34 with Dirk Steenbergen adding 20.

Palmerston Power v Uni Rebels

Palmerston showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with this season with a 98-54 win over the Uni Rebels. A steady flow of points from Jesse Bell (22), Tom Godwin (21), Fisto Bizima (12) and Aaron Simpson (10) was more than enough to assure the team of victory. The Power set up the win with a 24-12 first quarter, added another 12 to the total for a 49-25 half time lead and never looked back. The second half was a mirror of the first. Jake Kirby (17) and Jamie Hamill (13) did their best for the Rebels but support was sadly lacking.

Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets blasted the Razzle off the court with a 100-57 win that kick-starts their campaign for the season. The Jets are packing a lot of experience into their roster this season and should pose a formidable challenge to take out the title. This game was pretty much over before the end of the first quarter as the Bombers went on a 25-9 run behind the accurate shooting of Michael MacLean, Darrin Weetra & Liam Maclachlan. The Jets kept up the good shooting throughout the remainder of the game giving the Razzle no chance. Six Jets hit double figures. MacLean & MacLachlan hit 17 apiece, Darrin & Alex Weetra had 14 each, Shannon Bartlett 13 and Henry Bui 10. Reed Ridder was best for the Razzle with 21 while Nathan Radonich & Kayden Malseed hit 11 each.

Ladder:       Ansett, Palmerston Power & Tracy Village Jets 1-0, Eagles, Razzle & Uni Rebels 0-1, Lightning did not play

Next week Round 2:  Thursday: Eagles v Uni Rebels 8:00pm. Friday: Palmerston Power v Lightning 6:30pm & Ansett v Tracy Village Jets 8:00pm. Bye Razzle
