DBA's President Craig Trezise Praises Role of Joe Tertzakian and Reece Turner in Organisation's Rise

DARWIN Basketball Association acting president Craig Trezise is delighted with the positive vibes about the organisation and wants that same feeling across all of Territory basketball.

Trezise has been involved for only six months but has seen the powerful impact new DBA executive officer Joe Tertzakian and his right-hand man Reece Turner have made on the sport since May.

“The DBA has come ahead in leaps and bounds in the last six to 12 months around Joe’s ability to run tournaments and promote the game itself, and that was proven on grand final night,” Trezise said.

“It was just the general atmosphere and inclusion — people wanted to be there.

“Joe makes everyone feel very warm and welcome and the feeling inside the stadium has changed … it’s a pleasure to be involved in the DBA at the moment, as opposed to previously things not being done.”

Trezise looks set to become the DBA’s chairman in the newly-created role at the association’s first board meeting next year on January 30.

He is currently stepping in for Paul Mossman, who took leave at about the same time he faced court on alleged corruption charges unrelated to his basketball role.

Tertzakian has overseen facility, administration and structural upgrades, organised a Darwin representative team to go to Malaysia and capped his impressive term so far with a grand final spectacular on Saturday.

The man known universally as ‘Big Joe’ spent 13 years as a team operations manager for NBL clubs Brisbane and Gold Coast.

News of the DBA’s thriving business, which Trezise said was turning a “substantial profit”, comes just a fortnight since a motion was moved at Basketball NT’s AGM to conduct a review into Northern Territory basketball.

A review committee is still being put together.

Basketball NT executive officer Andrew Farley did not return the NT News’ calls before going to press.

“I personally don’t think the Territory is big enough to have a peak body and separate associations,” Trezise said.

“There is no point having two CEOs … and everything else duplicated.”

Trezise said there were also serious discussions taking place about developing a Darwin or Territory team in a State League competition.

“Other (NT) sports have proven successful in going into interstate competitions on a regular basis,” he said.

“We are one of the biggest sporting organisations in the Territory, so this would be a stepping stone if it proves successful and if the money is available we may look at moving into a national league.”
