League Women Round 11 –Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston

Abby Cubillo and Sam Rioli combined for 51 points to help the Tracy Village Jets knock off Palmerston 85-48. The Bombers put down the Power easily with the two players hitting points almost every time they touched the ball. A 24-12 first quarter run indicated a long night for the Power who scrambled to stay in touch with the high scoring Bombers who are averaging 65.8 points a game. No other team in the competition comes close. Demi Cubillo also hit double figures for the Jets with 15 while Tanasha Walters (13) and Christine Cooper (11) led the Power. Abby Cubillo (15.5ppg) finished with a season high 28 with Rioli (20.8ppg) potting 23. The Bombers remain undefeated in this competition and have run their win streak out to 11.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett tried to stay with the Uni Rebels in their game, but failed to match up with the fire power of the Rebels who won fairly easily in the end 69-47. The Blues trailed by just two at the first break 13-11, but lost ground in the second quarter after Tamara Sheppard (24.3ppg) and Carlee Ah Mat lit up the scoreboard during a 17-9 run for a 30-20 half time lead. The margin just got bigger for the remainder of the game with Sheppard finishing up with a game and team high 22. Jaylene Boundry added 17. Guard Carla Jones was the lone standout in double figures with 11 for the Blues.

Lightning got their first win of the season at the expense of the Eagles who dropped their second game in a row. Lightning woncomprehensively 60-22. Lightning’s newest acquisition, Kymira Woodberry, top scored for the game with 24. Lillian Williams had 9 for the Eagles.

League Men –Lightning v Uni Rebels

Lightning took sole possession of first place on the ladder with a close and hard fought 96-87 win over the Uni Rebels. Karsten Oltrop (9.3ppg) played a huge part in the victory as he had a season high 23 for the Lightning, his best showing for a couple of seasons. Team mates Thomas Godwin (15.8ppg) and Craig Martin got on the bandwagon by chipping in with 22 and 20 as the Lightning ran their record to 6-2. A 25-18 run in the second quarter gave the Lightning the buffer they needed and they protected that lead throughout the remainder of the game despite the challenge of the Rebels. The Rebels had their own trio of scorers with Tim Morris (21.3ppg) top scoring for the game with 32, Jamie Hamill nailing 22 and Lucci Cornelius hitting 21. The run-and-gun match was ideal for Hamill who loves to bomb away from outside the three point line…he hit six treys for the game.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Eagles withstood a second half challenge from the Tracy Village Jets to claim their fifth win of the season, a close 73-67 victory that put them into second place on the ladder. The Birds aggressive defense upset the Bombers early in the game, sending them to the free throw line often in the first quarter during a 21-11 run that put the Eagles in the driver’s seat. The Bombers chipped away at the 10 point lead, but failed to make any significant inroads in trying to overhaul the Birds. Eagle James Silvie (21.2ppg) led all scorers with 34, getting help from Jesse Williams-Hook (19 @ 17ppg) and Joseph Johnson (13). Alex Weetra and Daniel Miller (13ppg) led the Bombers with 13 each. The Bombers finished with 15 from the charity stripe while the Birds had 6.

Palmerston v Razzle

The green and gold finally put one up in the win column! The Razzle knocked off Palmerston 66-51 to claim their first win of the season. The Razzle has been on the wrong end of about four games this season and it was just a matter of time before they came up trumps. Hard working Rob Oliver (16.1ppg) led the side with a game high 22 points and his supporting cast did their part. Alan Watson hit 12, Eric Klenke 11 and Brendan Dell 10. Brad Jachmann was best for the Power with 16.
