THE Bega Bombers kept the Pambula Panthers well short of their usual winning margin on Saturday.
The reigning premiers defeated the Bega club 110-55.
However, the final result came after Pambula led 50-1 in the opening quarter.
The Bombers put on a stunning display of tenacity and hunger to outshine the Panthers in the second and fourth quarters.
Bega coach Chris Dwyer was happy with the result.
“It was really pleasing, except for the first quarter where they blew us out of the water,” Dwyer said.
“We set ourselves the target of not losing to them by more than 10 goals.”
He said the last time the two clubs met, Pambula thrashed the scoreboard by a margin of almost 30 goals.
Again it was some of the rising young stars showing their potential, according to the coach.
“We put Kel Evans and Dale Leahy in the middle to play on the Proctor brothers and they did a fantastic job on them,” Dwyer said.
“And young Nick Forester could be one of the more dominant centre half forwards in the coming years.”
The club has grown into its own skin in recent weeks and a fit, young side has settled to the rhythm of the competition.
Dwyer said players are enjoying the building culture at the Bombers and the club is seeing a boost from its younger members as a result.
“That was a 20-goal turnaround from the last time we played them,”
he said.
“Now the target will be to beat them on the small ground at Bega.”
A general bye this weekend and a round bye the following week will see Bega off the track for two weeks.
The team won’t be slac-king off though as it looks to shore up a finals spot.
“We’ll be going pretty hard at training over the next two weeks and we might even play a scratch match,” Dwyer said.
“We’ve set ourselves the goal of not losing at home.
“It is a big round for us to take on Bermagui when we get back.”
A win could see the club lock in a finals place, but Dwyer said the team would also strive for third on the ladder to secure a home semi-final.
