CONSECUTIVE weeks off is never good for a football team, but it doesn’t appear to have hampered the Bombers too much.
The Bega senior Aussie rules team bounced back from a two-week absence to a rousing win over the Bermagui Breakers.
The Bombers had a shaky first quarter, but fired up to win 16.14 (110) to 7.6 (48).
“We were a bit rusty at the start and conceded the first three goals, but we did pretty well to fight back I thought,” Bombers coach Chris Dwyer said.
The team had been building quite a strong roll-on before a two-week bye, which had an impact early on.
“The boys tried to stay to the game plan, but were a bit off, just one step behind or one step too early,” Dwyer said.
However, the club was able to rally late into the first quarter and take a narrow lead at the break.
The second and third quarters saw the Bega backline working brilliantly to deny the Breakers many scoring chances.
Dwyer said it was some of the veterans of the club standing up to hold the Breakers at bay.
Justin Welsford was exceptional at full-back, with the Breakers scoring just nine points in the half.
Adam Blacka was a welcome addition, while Cody Hazelgrove-Danvers was welcomed back to the fold.
“Adam adds a bit of size and mobility and is always handy when we have him in, sometimes even just for his experience,” Dwyer said.
“Cody was back for his first game in about a month and played his best game of the year.
“Meanwhile, Todd Ingram, Scott Hay and Pete Russell all stood up and had cool heads when we needed it.”
Up front it was the attacking prowess of Liam Wilkinson that headed up the scoring for the Bombers.
The young Eden-based forward stepped up for one his first rounds in the senior grade and fired five goals.
The win is a boost of confidence for the Bombers, who will face another big challenge.
“It was pleasing to get the result as we have to play the Diggers at home next,” Dwyer said.
The Bombers are holding third on the competition ladder.
