One of Albion’s favourite son’s, Aaron Tymms, is set to join the WRFL senior interleague coaching panel as an assistant coach.
Tymms will suit up alongside fellow interleague coaches Brett Jacobs, Aaron Freeland and Chairman of Selectors Steve Thom when the WRFL take on the Southern Football League in the AFL Vic Metro Championships held at VISY Park on March 29.
“I was shocked when I got the call, but thoroughly excited to be picked for the role considering it is my first year as senior coach,” Tymms said.
Having started his career with Albion when he was a junior, Tymms had a brief stint at Sunshine YCW as an Under 18 player, before returning to the Cats where he celebrated his 400th game milestone in Round 15 last year.
Captaining Albion to the 2010 Division One Premiership, Tymms took his leadership levels to new heights, taking on the role as senior playing assistant coach last season, before being selected as Albion’s head coach in 2014.
“As a coach, I am most looking forward to seeing the boys enjoying their football and being united as a team,” Tymms said.
“Obviously the main goal for Albion this year would be to make finals football however, seeing the overall improvement of our senior side and team culture would show that we have built a solid foundation for years to come.
“In regards to the interleague though, I’ll bring my enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the role, but most of all I think it will be a great learning experience and I look forward to working together with the other coaches.”
WRFL Senior Interleague Chairman of Selectors, Steve Thom said that the appointment of a second assistant coach was never in doubt.
“Whilst we already had one assistant coach in Aaron Freeland, we always planned to have two assistants in order to help out Brett at a ground level, so the addition of Tymms is fantastic.”
Despite his inexperience as a senior coach, Thom believes that Tymms has the knowledge and potential to be a terrific coach in the future.
“Whilst he is a first year coach, he has been in the game for many years and is really energetic and enthusiastic which I think will rub off on everyone both on the field and on the sidelines,” Thom said.
“It’s really important that we surround ourselves with good people who are on the same page, and I think that we will learn a lot from Tymms, just as much as he will learn a lot from this coaching experience, so it’s great to have him on board.”
The AFL Vic Metro Championships triple-header will kick off with the WRFL v SFL at 11am, the EDFL v NFL clash at 1:10pm and the top seeded VAFA v EFL at 3.20pm.
Tickets can be purchased at the gate on the day with prices starting from $10 adults, $5 concession/pensioners and children under 16 FREE.
