WWABi joins ABSL

PRESS RELEASE

Waitakere West Auckland Basketball Inc joins Auckland Basketball Services Ltd.

March 1, 2016: Auckland Basketball Services Limited ("ABSL") is pleased to announce that Waitakere West Auckland Basketball Association Inc. (WWABI) has joined Counties Manukau Basketball Inc. and Basketball Auckland Inc. as a ABSL stakeholder and shareholder.

As a result, ABSL will assume responsibility and be accountable to WWABI for the management, administration and development of community basketball in West Auckland.  As part of this change, Operations Manager of WWABI, Aik Ho, will be employed by ABSL and assume responsibility for basketball development and the deployment of ABSL programmes into West Auckland. The ABSL Board welcomes WWABI appointed board representatives Ollie Bryce and Pirihira Puata to the ABSL Board.   ABSL will have no responsibility with regards to the Supercity Rangers which will remain an independent organisation.

Simon Whyte, the Chair of ABSL, welcomed the move saying

" It's a very exciting development and we are delighted to welcome WWABI on board. The decision by WWABI to join Counties Manukau and Basketball Auckland in ABSL will bring together and align more resources and representation for basketball in West Auckland. With an enlarged geographic footprint, ABSL will now serve a population catchment in excess of 1 million people and intends to deliver formal development programmes that at their peak will benefit over 10,000 players per week. The move by WWABI in joining with Counties Manukau and Basketball Auckland will improve basketball's ability to work with Auckland Council, BBNZ and regional sport agencies to secure further support and the resources required to grow participation and strengthen development pathways for basketball not just in West Auckland but also across the Central, Eastern and Southern areas of Auckland and Counties. It's a very positive development for basketball in Auckland.

Ollie Bryce of WWABI said:

“We have watched ABSL's development over the last three years under the leadership of its GM Dave Mackay and have been impressed by the progress it has made and by the way it has achieved it . While there will be some changes for our community, ABSL and WWABI have had good experiences in successfully integrating basketball administration and operations and in delivering its services in a manner that respects the local basketball community and preserves the local associations identity. We think it's a good fit. We will be working with ABSL to ensure the handover of administration and other functions occurs as smoothly as possible".

"With the changing shape and demographics of Auckland, demand for basketball is growing so rapidly across Auckland it is putting a real strain on the capacity and resources to meet that demand. Our participation in ABSL and the consolidation of back office functions, administration and strategy that will come from this move will improve the sports ability to service demand in West Auckland  while ensuring its unique identity is retained. It is very positive and exciting development and a milestone not just for WWABI but for the ongoing development and growth of basketball in Auckland generally. "
