This weekend the Whitehorse Colts will take centre stage at Box Hill City Oval in a VWFL / VFL double-header.
The Colts will host Redan in Round 5 Division 1 action, with sixth placed Whitehorse looking to further promote women’s football in the sixth year they have taken a match to the VFL venue with the support of the Box Hill Hawks on Sunday.
Whitehorse Colts secretary Richard Khan said the Hawks have shown “real community leadership” in partnering with the Whitehorse Colts, across the various levels at the club.
“Whitehorse Colts have worked with the Box Hill Hawks for six years to promote local female football,” Khan said.
“It started with Youth Girls curtain raiser and curtain fall games in the last five years. Those girls who first played in our Youth Girls curtain raiser games are now playing in our women's team to promote local female football.
“The players are very excited to play, and looking forward to showcasing what women's football is all about.”
Whitehorse has a close relationship with Box Hill not only due to location, but also with Hawk Liam Tobin at the helm of the Division 1 Colts side.
“Having current Box Hill Hawks player Liam Tobin as coach has helped develop structured training drills, systems and improved their football development,” Khan said.
“The team has trained a few times this year at Box Hill … it has helped develop a real sense of being part of a bigger football picture.”
The club produced a video promotion through Daniel Mallia Videography (www.danielmallia.com) leading up to the Round 5 game, which forms part of a season long ‘Women’s Football Video Diary’ to be produced by the club.
Khan hopes these events and added exposure to a different market at VFL level will help grow interest in the club and women’s football.
“Whitehorse Colts currently have the full female pathway from Auskick through underage teams to our women's team.
“We intend to continue to promote local female football in our area and build on our vision to have a local area team that represents local players at the highest level possible, playing at the best venues available.
“We acknowledge the support of the VWFL and Box Hill Hawks in helping make games such as these possible.”
