Gillingham makes final cut

Sawtell/Toormina Saints AFL footballer, Jack Gillingham, has been selected in the NSW/ACT Under 16s RAMS team to contest the 2008 NAB AFL Under 16 National Championships.

Gillingham will travel with the rest of the team to the Gold Coast next Wednesday [23rd July] to prepare for the opening game of the championships against Western Australia at Carrara on Friday the 25th July.

The championships continue until Sunday the 3rd of August with the top two teams from the two divisions from this round of matches progressing to the finals to be played on AFL Grand Final Day, Saturday 27th September, as a curtain raiser to AFL’s biggest game of the year.

Gillingham’s selection is significant given the fierce competition for a position in this year’s team. AFL(NSW/ACT) Talent & Coach Development Manager, Darren Denneman, is confident that the team will perform well at the championships as the task set for his staff to select a team was a very difficult one.

“This years group is a very talented one and there will be some very unlucky and disappointed boys who’ve missed out, but that being said I’m very confident that we have picked a really strong side that should perform well” Denneman said.

And good performances could lead RAMS players to the next step in the pathway to playing at the highest level with these championships being the ideal opportunity for AFL clubs to see the next crop of future AFL stars strut their stuff.

Gillingham enjoyed a very strong pre-season and has improved noticeably in recent years after being touted as a junior of some promise. Simon Taylor headlined those players to be unlucky not to make the cut.

Gillingham was one of four Northern Heat players to make the squad, and the only one north of Newcastle, highlighting the pedigree of our junior talent.

All our congratulations and best wishes are extended to Jack.
