AFL NSW/ACT Media Release
Sydney Swans heading North to promote AFL
Sydney Swans players will head to all areas of Regional NSW in early December to give promotion of the game in 2010 a early start.
In Northern NSW, ten players will visit schools, hold clinics, meet with club administrators and put local talented players through their paces. Areas visited will include Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Urunga, Nambucca Heads, Kempsey, Port Macquarie and Tamworth.
The itinerary will vary throughout the region, however all players will arrive on Wednesday 2nd December after completing their morning trainings session in Sydney. They will spend the afternoon visiting local schools. In Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie the players will then be guest coaches at Community Auskick Centres being conducted in those cities.
The evening will see players attend dinner with local school teachers, club volunteers and administrators passing on their experience and advice on further developing the game in Northern NSW.
More schools will be given the opportunity to have the Swans players visit on Thursday 3rd December. This includes players attending Grade 3 & 4 NAB AFL Auskick Gala Days being held in Grafton and Kempsey. The Swans will then put local school teachers through their paces, providing them with greater skills to teach the game in PE & Sport lessons.
The visits will conclude with the Swans putting local talented players through their paces. In Coffs Harbour & Port Macquarie this will involve Northern Heat & AFL NSW/ACT Academy players, while players from the new Tamworth Junior AFL competition will be involved in a training session in Tamworth.
The visit will give local AFL a further boost after seeing an increase of 20% in participation across the region in 2009.
Northern NSW appears to be a growing area of interest for AFL clubs. In December, Hawthorn and Essendon will also visit Coffs Harbour to use the local top class training facilities on offer for their own training camps. The Gold Coast Football Club, the newest AFL team have also recently made contact to express interest in being involved in game development opportunities in Northern NSW.
