Coach accreditation and re-accreditation – Has it expired?
Over recent years in New South Wales and ACT we have seen an expansive growth in our game regarding participants, volunteers and also coaches. It is important that all coaches understand that they need to keep any coaching qualifications they have received (Level 1, 2 or 3) updated and relevant. It is mandatory that all coaches involved in our great game be appropriately accredited to help continue the high standard and growth of AFL not only nationally but importantly in our state. Therefore all clubs and coaches need to understand the importance of not only attending courses to receive coaching accreditation but also what is required in regards to the process of re-accreditation prior to the 4 year expiry date of all qualifications. For further information please visit the coaching section at www.aflnswact.com.au.
Change of details – Emails? Phone numbers? Address?

A large amount of information is distributed via email, if you ever switch email address (or any other details) please contact jason.saddington@aflnswact.com.au to organise an update of our coach database.

The Paul Kelly Cup state final kicked off at Blacktown Olympic Park on September 6 and 7. Congratulations to all the schools that participated.
Wagga Wagga’s Mater Dei claimed their second consecutive Paul Kelly Cup after defeating Finley Public School by 31 points in the boys final.
The win was made even more special for the side with the player the competition is named after, former Sydney Swans legend Paul Kelly, in attendance to present the top-placed teams with their medallions.
For some of the Mater Dei players, it was their second state title in as many years after playing in last year’s final at the home of Team GWS in Sydney’s west.
For the girls, Blacktown based Kings Langley Public School has become the first school ever to take out the Paul Kelly Cup girls state-wide title winning the grand final by seven points over Clovelly Public School.
Local side, Bellingen were most competitive and finished better than middle of the pack against accomplished opposition.
Umpiring
Umpires on the rise
In 2010 the number of umpires and umpire coaches has surpassed the 1000 mark for the first time in NSW and the ACT reaching 1047 active umpires and umpire coaches. In all, 1009 umpires and 38 umpire coaches. In 2009 there was a state total of 925 active umpires and umpire coaches, the growth represents 12.6% increase.
The result is in no small part to the AFL Umpire Coach Professional Development Program in place which has two major focus areas in the umpiring environment and the approach of the coach. Many of the umpiring groups that have their coaches immersed in the Umpire Coach Professional Development Program have had an increase in numbers via retention and recruitment as a direct result of their coaches and the program.
Work still needs to continue with the whole football community to ensure a positive match day environment exists to ensure the retention of umpires. Nationally 25% of umpires are lost each year with the majority leaving due to abuse.
To grow the game and umpiring numbers lets continue to make ‘Umpiring everyone’s business’

Turner makes it six Grand Finals in a row
On Saturday 4th September the AFL North Coast competition reached its pinnacle when Sawtell Toormina took on Port Macquarie in the 2010 Grand Final.
While this was the highlight of the year for the players and coaches involved, it was also the ultimate reward for the AFL North Coast umpiring group. This year the grand final umpire appointments saw Luke Turner officiate his sixth consecutive senior grand final.
Luke was joined also by Sean Staniforth umpiring his fifth consecutive grand final and his brother Mitchell Turner umpiring his second consecutive senior grand final.
Luke said of his achievement, “It is an honour to be selected to umpire six Grand Finals. Being selected to represent your umpiring group on Grand Final day is as rewarding an experience as there is in regional AFL”.
Luke said of the highlight of his last six grand final appointments, “The highlight would be umpiring the last two Senior Grand Finals with my brother, Mitchell. He is forging a strong career in his own right, and one of the most talented umpires who has come through our junior system”.
Luke and Mitchell were both apart of the AFL NSW/ACT Umpires Development Academy in the last few years, and have also been well coached by Rod Macpherson, AFL North Coast Umpires Coach.
Luke said of his involvement in umpiring, “The North Coast is a great group to be involved with, and it has a great culture focusing on a mix between fun and professionalism”.
