Every club in the AFL North Coast Junior and Senior competitions has at least one woman, but probably many women, who contrinute greatly to the success of the club week in and week out.
The Women's Round is celebrated throughout the country to ensure that these dedicated people receive the thanks that they deserve.
Some of the highlights of women in AFL in NSW and the ACT are detailed below
AFL NSW/ACT CELEBRATES 2012 WOMEN’S ROUND
ROUND 17 – JULY 20-22
Across Australia, almost 95,000 women participated in an AFL program in 2011.
Last year there were 25,664 female Auskick participants nationally.
In New South Wales and the ACT, 28,565 females participated in an AFL program or competition in 2011.
At 8131, NSW/ACT has the highest female Auskick participation rate in the country, and across the states the demand for girls-only Auskick centres has resulted in the creation of five new Auskick centres in the last two years.
In NSW/ACT 812 female footballers are currently participating in senior female football competitions, with another 407 girls aged 9-13 in junior club programs.
More than 16,600 girls were engaged in a school program in 2011, with 2339 of these opting to play in dedicated female competitions.
2012 marked the inaugural year for the Sydney Youth Girls Competition. Held in two locations across Sydney it was created to enhance the pathway for girls to transition from Auskick to club football.
In a landmark moment for regional women’s football, the Broken Hill Football League formed a women’s team, whose success has earned them the opportunity make local history when they play against Port Lincoln in a curtain-raiser match to the Crows versus Essendon AFL match on August 4th
AFL NSW/ACT conducted the first U18 Youth Girls Development Camp in Canberra, March 2012 where 29 girls from around the state gathered to undergo a weekend of skills training and personal development.
In May 2012, NSW/ACT competed in the AFL U18 Youth Girls National Championship in Adelaide, where the team’s valiant performances were reward with the selection of Captain Stephanie Power and Heather Anderson to the U18 All Stars team – the second selection for Anderson.
Growth in female participation in northern NSW resulted in the first ever Under 15 Female Swans Cup Regional Final, with Maclean High School taking home the trophy.
