Tuesday 7th May saw six schools from the Coffs Harbour area play at Leisure Park in the Under 16 division including the first team ever from Bishop Druitt College, a local private school who we have been working with to help develop AFL within their school. Bishop Druitt College made the semi finals and pushed Toormina High School all the way but came up just short. Toormina HS went on to comfortably beat Orara High School in the Grand Final and will progress to the regional final on Wednesday 5th June.
On Wednesday 8th May four schools from the Clarence Valley converged on Ellem Oval in Grafton to compete in both the under 14 and 16 divisions of the Swans Cup. It was a fantastic day for everyone with the Grafton Tigers managing to find some more new recruits for their new Under 15 team now competing tin the AFLNC Junior competition. Grafton High School’s under 14 team will progress to the regional final whilst their under 16 team were gallant in defeat to Maclean High School whose team consisted of a number of players from the AFLNC Junior club the Lower Clarence Eagles.
North Coast development staff had a well earned rest on Thursday before the Coffs Harbour under 14 gala day on Friday 10th May again at Leisure Park. On a glorious day the four schools in attendance were quite evenly matched with the undefeated Coffs Harbour High School looking the team to beat after the pool games. John Paul College showed great improvement over the day and beat Coffs Harbour HS in the grand final to progress to the finals in early June.
The regional finals will be played at Leisure Park on Wednesday 5th June between Toormina HS and Maclean HS in the under 16’s and Grafton HS, John Paul College and McCarthy College from Tamworth in the under 14’s. On that day there will also be an Under 15 girls competition with three schools already entered and another two working on getting a team together with some help from AFL NSW/ACT development staff.
