Last years boys winners West Kempsey (eventually second in the state final) were always going to be strong again but both Coffs Harbour PS and Yamba PS were very competitive with them in the pool games. North Haven PS also showed they had improved a lot from their Gala Day victory and played well in the round robin games.
Eventually it was Kempsey West PS and Yamba PS who went on to play off in the Grand Final. The game was a tight battle with only a goal separating the teams at half time but Kempsey West ran away with it in the second half to win 4.3.27 to 1.1.7.
Yamba PS has always produced strong Paul Kelly Cup teams due to the long time support of teacher Ian Clifford. This year their girls team was always going to be hard to beat and both the other schools struggled when they played them. Having said that the two games between South West Rocks PS and Narranga PS on the day were particularly close and enthralling contests, South West Rocks fell over the line on both occasions to progress to the Grand Final against Yamba PS.
As expected Yamba were far too strong in the final winning 6.4.40 to 0.1.1 to progress to the State Final of the PKC to be played on the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday 19th June 2013. With a little more specific coaching by Ian Clifford in sessions leading up to the event we expect Yamba PS to be very competitive in Sydney.
