Toormina High School fell short of progressing to the semi finals of the Statewide Combined High School (CHS) Championships against a red-hot Bulli side at Fitzroy Oval.
The quality of the match was of a high standard with the intensity and attack on the ball a highlight for both sides. Many naturally skilled players were in either side, despite many coming from a background playing other football codes.
Bulli High School jumped out of the gates early on racing to a lead they would hold for the rest of the contest. Bulli, is a small town 70 kilometres south of Sydney (northern extremity of suburban Wollongong) with a population of 5,400.
The efficiency of the forward lines was the main difference. Bulli made the most of their opportunities and effectively targeted their tall men, much taller than what Toormina could oppose. The captain, a Pigeons Representative player, was especially dominant and it is no wonder why he has several AFL clubs looking at him, with a trademark kick and mark, the touch of skill a level above the rest on the field.
Toormina squandered a few chances but were served well by Jordan Hayes who kicked a couple of nice running goals. Blake Brissett led the midfield division which was competitive against its bigger opponents.
Bulli High School (89) def. Toormina High School (48)
It is still a great achievement for the local side to make it to the Quarter-Finals, having picked up a large percentage of their squad along the way. Bulli will now progress to the Semi Finals and face sides as far away as Broken Hill.
