Good news for the North Coast as five made the recent 24 man squad for the Northern Heat Under 18s who will compete in the State Trials in late January.
The Trials will be held at Coffs Harbour's BCU Stadium.
The selected players include:
- Hamish Pearce (Coffs Swans)
- Michael Hendry (Sawtell)
- Jack Gillingham (Sawtell)
- Simon Taylor (Sawtell)
- Thomas Haskew (Nambucca Valley)
It is one of the highest intakes since the introduction of the Talented Player Program. The players are busily training in Coffs Harbour and will also partake in a couple of sessions with the Heat side over the next month in preparation for the gruelling 3 day carnival.
It will be the second straight year Pearce and Hendry have represented the Heat in the carnival. Gillingham and Taylor are under age players and were prominent in the Under 16 Rams Squad last year. The good news story must be for Haskew who has endured a run of long-term injuries throughout the last few seasons to emerge as a tall find for the Heat squad. Tall and athletic players never go astray in these carnivals and I suspect Haskew will be one to grab some attention in the carnival.
Young 16 year old, Sam Turner just missed selection and has been named as first emergency.
Adding to the local flavour, local 'Roos player Sam Dawes is assistant coach of the Heat side.
