North Coast Umpire Coaches, Rod Macpherson (Seniors) and Luke Turner (Juniors) went to Sydney recently to take part in the State Umpiring Network Conference.
The annual conference offered coaches the opportunity to associate with their peers and formulate plans to improve the umpiring environment for current and prospective umpires.
It was a productive weekend with a new vision formulated, as well as discussion of a range of initiatives targetted at enhancing the umpiring image.
NSW/ACT AFL Head, Dale Holmes was the key speaker on the first night where he communicated his strategy for the inclusion of the Western Sydney AFL side. Game Development Manager, Simon Laughton, also spoke on the weekend, in a key indication of the state bodies' support behind the development of umpiring.
Coaches also got an introduction to Footyweb in entering umpire details, and took part in a Communication presentation by expert, Barry Palm.
Rod, a Year 3 Personal Development Program Participant, was one of the most experienced coaches present, with Luke undertaking his second year in the program.
The duo took a lot out of the weekend, including a few new initiatives which they hope to implement in the upcoming 2009 season.
