“Fevolution” is coming to the Melton Toyota Riddell District Football Netball League, with former Carlton and Brisbane forward Brendan Fevola playing a one-off game for Woodend-Hesket early next month.
Fevola will don the brown and gold of the Hawks on Sunday 4th May in a standalone Sunday fixture as Woodend-Hesket host Romsey at the Gilbert Gordon Oval.
Woodend-Hesket president Stuart Braddy is pleased to have Fevola on board, hoping that the appearance of the former Coleman Medallist can help lift the club’s profile and that of footy in the area.
“[Woodend-Hesket] need to lift our profile and get our town talking about footy again,” Braddy commented.
“Like all small-town clubs we find it increasingly hard to obtain and retain sponsors, so when the idea [of getting Fevola] was put before us, we formed a working party to bring the excitement back to town”.
“All RDFNL clubs are in the same boat in that we need substantial income to compete and this day has been specifically planned to ensure the long-term future of the Woodend-Hesket Football Netball Club”.
The excitement factor Braddy was looking for seems to be there, with the Hawks’ playing group joining the Woodend community in eagerly looking forward to the game.
“The whole playing group has embraced the idea and we’ve seen an increase in numbers both on and off the field as a result,” Braddy said.
“In our opinion Brendan’s commitment to this round has already had a positive impact on our club and has the town abuzz with excitement”.
The football club is planning to make a gala day out of Fevola’s appearance, with kids activities planned and a large crowd expected.
“We’re working closely with the Auskick organization to have Brendan take the young ones through a clinic,” Braddy mentioned.
“It’s still a work in progress – there will be a designated area [on the day] for autograph and photo opportunities as well as face painting, a jumping castle and loads more fun”.
The Woodend-Hesket FNC are selling special marquees for the day for groups of 20 people which includes gate entry, BBQ lunch, finger food during the day and beer, wine and soft drink throughout the day. Marquees are $2,000 each, and can be purchased by contacting Braddy on 0417 592 151.
Woodend-Hesket will donate a percentage of the day’s income to the Nick’s Wish Cancer Support Foundation, a cancer support group founded by the Boyd family of Sunbury in memory of their son Nick. More information on Nick’s Wish can be found at http://nickswish.gofundraise.com.au
