AFL Goldfields is pleased to confirm the announcement of six scholarships through the AFL Goldfields Women in Football Grants Program.
In August of this year, AFL Goldfields released details of a grants program for those actively involved in coaching, umpiring or administration and who have a genuine desire to enhance their knowledge and skills.
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide females in the AFL Goldfields Region who are involved in Australian Rules Football as a Coach, Umpire or Administrator with the opportunity to undertake training within an existing pathway in the industry to reach their leadership potential.
Total funding of $3,000 was allocated to promote and enhance aspirations for females across the AFL Goldfields affiliated Leagues, Clubs and Umpiring Associations, with funding provided by AFL Goldfields and also via a generous donation from Dr Susan Alberti.
Details of the individuals who have been successful in securing funding through this program are as follows:
Kellie McLeod (Ballarat Football Umpires Association): Kellie aims to reach AFL / VFL elite level umpiring. To do this will require regular travel to Melbourne. The grant will be used to meet travel costs.
Rebecca Hunter (Broadford FNC): Rebecca is the new Broadford FNC Executive Administrator, and has been on the Club Committee for 5 years. This grant will be used to cover costs for a Communications/Marketing course designed to develop new skills and hopefully inspire more females to follow her lead into Football administration.
Lee Prentice (North Ballarat City FNC): Lee in the North Ballarat City FNC Administration Manager. Having previously been involved at the Illabarook FNC for approximately 15 years in various capacities. The grant will be used by Lee to further develop her skills and complete a Certificate IV in Sport and Recreation through the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre Institute of Training.
Robyn Fraser (Lake Wendouree FNC): Robyn has had no prior involvement in football and is the new Female Football Manager at the Lake Wendouree FNC, overseeing the Clubs new Open Age Female side, Youth Girls side and helping set up the new Junior Girls side at the LWFNC. The grant will help Robyn complete a course in Sports Management/Administration.
Krista Woodroffe (Bacchus Marsh FNC): Krista is a player for the Bacchus Marsh FNC Open Age female side. Krista has previously played for BMFNC as a Netballer (player, Umpire and Coach), and began playing football for the BMFNC Open Age football side in 2015. Krista has aspirations to develop her career as a Player and Coach in female football, and the Grant will contribute towards the cost of Coaching and Development courses.
Leanne Backwell (Lancefield FNC): Leanne is the new President of the Lancefield FNC. After serving the Club for several years as a Netball manager and committee member, she is (to the best of our knowledge) the 1st female club President of the Lancefield FNC, and the 1st female Senior club President in the RDFNL. The grant will be used by Leanne to further develop her skills and complete a Club Sports Administration and Management program.
Each recipient will receive a scholarship to the amount of $500 from a total pool of $3,000.
Earlier this year, Western Bulldogs Vice-President and known philanthropist Dr Susan Alberti confirmed a commitment to double the funding issued by AFL Goldfields at the Ballarat FNL Women in Football Luncheon in July, allowing the Commission to double the amount of scholarships issued to applicants under this program from three scholarships to six.
The scholarships are designed to encourage more females to get involved in the sport of Australian Rules Football in the fields of Coaching, Umpiring and Administration.
AFL Goldfields hopes to continue the program well into the future with information on the next round of funding to be announced later in 2016.
