Last weekend saw the Bendigo Bank AFLCJ U14’s Cairns Lions play AFL Cape York Crusaders in the 2014 North Queensland Championships played in Cairns. From our initial squad of 60 players who came to trial, 23 players of Cairns best junior talent were selected to participate in the championships over the two days.
Friday morning saw the team come together at Cazaly Stadium for a final training and team bonding session before the afternoon game. This gave the team a good chance to spend some quality time together, as well as the coaching staff going through some last minute game day planning in preparation for the tough task ahead against the Cape York boys.
Once we finalized our preparations, the team made their way over to Cape York House for a delicious lunch with our host team, along with Professional Development session presented by Jason Torney (Head of Gold Coast Suns Academy) and Noel Judkins (AFL recruiter for Essendon Bombers). This gave the boys from both teams a firsthand opportunity to hear from two professionals in the AFL industry, on what it is AFL scouts look for in a junior footballer, and the pathway in making to the elite level.
The afternoon game was played on Cape York’s home turf at Buchan St, to which the home side capitalized by getting off to a blistering start with a brilliant display of raw ability and athleticism taking a 33 point lead into three quarter time leaving the Lion’s boys scratching their head. But in the end it was a fantastic display of courage and hard work that saw the Lions storm home with a 6 goal last quarter and snatch the win by 3 points with Max Halton contributing 5 of the 6 majors.

Saturday night gave the two teams another chance to go head to head, this time under lights at Cazaly’s stadium. It seemed that Lions carried their final quarter momentum through from the previous game that saw them get out to an early convincing lead early, but not without resistance and a great physical display again from Cape York. In the end it was the Lions who came out on top with the victory with some gutsy and brilliant efforts from Skipper Max Culpitt and Port Douglas ‘pocket rocket’ Daniel Davidson.
