Several weeks ago, AFLCJ were pleased to announce that for the 2nd time, our AFLCJ Cairns Lions would take on the travelling AFL Goldfields (Country Victoria) in a representative match to be played at Cazalys Stadium.
Last weekend on Sunday (29th June 2014) 2:00pm at Cazalys Stadium, AFLCJ Cairns Lions were looking to revenge last year’s loss against the strong Goldfields outfit. This time last year, the Cairns Lions were gallant in defeat with the final score: Cairns Lions 8.6-54 def. by AFL Goldfields 15.12-102.
Over the past few years, AFLCJ have developed a fantastic relationship with AFL Goldfields and we hope in future years to continue our budding relationship. Our friendliness with AFL Goldfields didn’t mean we would take them lightly. This match was the equivalent to the U17 Melbourne Trip.
For over a month now, AFLCJ have been training as a squad with players aged 15 (Born in 1999), 16 (Born in 1996) and 17 (Born in 1997) all vying for the opportunity to represent their region, Cairns. We originally selected a squad of 65, however due to QLD State Representatives, School Holidays, Family commitments and injuries, some players were ruled out of selection.
Our final 24 players selected for the match were;
Jack Bowles (Cairns City Lions), Denzel Cooper (South Cairns), Sam Davey (Centrals TB), Jack Dickson (Port Douglas), Nathan Evans (Port Douglas), Niall Gee (Cairns Hawks), Clifford Johnny (Pyramid Power), Jakob Kay (Cairns City Lions), Hayden King (Manunda Hawks), Christopher Lee (North Cairns), Ethan McCullough (Port Douglas), Heath Molloy (North Cairns), Mugzy Mooka (Manunda Hawks), Ailin Napiorkowski (South Cairns), Angus O’Sughrue (Centrals TB), Jonathon Peeters (South Cairns), Kaea Pomare (Centrals TB), Benjamin Roethig (Manunda Hawks), Ben Shaw (Cairns City Lions), Daniel Smith (Centrals TB), Phillip Stumer (Manunda Hawks), Elia Ware (Manunda Hawks), Morgan Welch (Centrals TB) and Glendon Woosup (AFLCY Eagles).
Captain: Glendon Woosup
Vice Captain: Jack Dickson
The team was coached by Marc Harbrow and assisted by injured Cairns City Lions Colt player, Lachlan Smith. Melissa Smith was the trainer, who did a fantastic job looking after all the boys. Sean Hunter was runner.
Final Score:
AFL Cairns 7.15-57 def. by AFL Goldfields 19.12-126
Goal Kickers: Jakob Kay (2), Glendon Woosup (2), Sam Davey (1), Niall Gee (1) & Christopher Lee
Best Players: Glendon Woosup, Sam Davey, Jonathon Peeters, Mugzy Mooka, Kaea Pomare & Daniel Smith
Despite the score line, the match was highly skilful, competitive and played in the right spirit. AFL Goldfields skill execution and spread from the contest really stretched Cairns ability to keep the game on our terms. Cairns had plenty of opportunities going inside 50 and at times built enormous pressure on Goldfields defence, however we weren’t able to capitalize on the scoreboard and build momentum. Our ferocious attack into the contest was admired by the coaching staff from AFL Goldfields. Despite conceding goals, our back 6 were strong all day and really drove several of our attacking plays from the back half. The boys learnt a lot from this experience and will be better for it.
Glendon Woosup was named Best on Ground, as selected by AFL Goldfields Coaching Staff.
Also, congratulations to all umpires that were selected to officiate this match:
Field Umpire: Liam Kermode (AFL Goldfields supplied two field umpires)
Goal Umpires: Ali Davey & Solomon Henderson
Boundary Umpires: William Heard, Harry Valente, Sampho Hing & Kai Stuchberry
Interchange Steward: Luke Redenbach
This match concludes AFLCJ Boys Representative Calendar for Season 2014. Well done to all the boys who have donned the Cairns Lions uniform. For all players who have made the next representative level, we wish you the best of luck for your remaining fixtures.
