The NQ Under 16 Championships were up in Airlie Beach over the weekend which saw teams from Capricornia, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and Cape York compete for the title.
In game one the boys were against Townsville and were a bit gun shy early and couldn’t convert some chances and went down 6-6-42 to 2-2-14.
After a bit of a break and a change of mindset the boys looked hungry against Mackay. The attack on the footy was first class and they were rewarded by beating Mackay 7-3-45 to 1-5-11.
The Crusaders were the next challenge for the boys first up Sunday morning and they brought that same intensity from the Mackay game into this game. Although having more scoring shots and dominating a majority of the game, missed opportunities hurt the team again going down to the crusaders 3-4-22 to 0-8-8.
In the last game the boys were against a rested Cairns team and were out classed in the end going down to the lions 11-7-73 to 1-0-6.
Despite only winning one game the boys were competitive in all games and should be very proud of their efforts in all 4 games.
A big thank you to all the parents who came up to Airlie Beach for the weekend and the volunteers who helped the team. Thank you to Whitsunday Football Club who was an amazing host throughout the weekend and to Jim Urquhart and the team from AFLQ for putting a great carnival on.
Congratulations to Josh Redsell for being awarded the coaches award and Connor Russell for being awarded the Whitsunday ‘Bloods’ Jersey for the best under ager for the team.
Also a massive congratulations to Josh Redsell, Ben Dempsy, Corey Murphy and Riley Raven who were selected in the initial NQ U16 squad as well as former Capricornia player Connor West.
