I’ts what we’ve been waiting for since the Capricornia AFL Grand Final last year, footy is back. With the big games of footy already started on tv and our own regional seasons starting next week there is definitely some excitement in the air, however excitement would be an understatement for some of our Under 16’s boys. After training for months it is finally time for our Under 16’s Boys Capricornia Cobras to do battle with the best North Queensland has to offer, a chance for our young guns to show case their skills at a high level of footy. The long awaited arrival of the footy season is finally upon us, and what welcoming return it will be with this weekend’s games being played in Airlie beach. The tagline ‘Footy in Paradise’ has never been more appropriate.
At the helm of our mighty Capricornia Cobras is coach Brad ‘Freckles’ Matheson who has been working very hard with our boys to get them ready for a big weekend of footy. Alongside Brad in the coaches box will be Luke Rumpf and Ben O’Neill both of whom are expecting big things from the Cobras this year.
The Cobra’s also have the benefit of having multiple Gold Coast Suns Academy players who will add to the experience and knowledge of the representative squad. With names like Jackson Mangion, Fraser Bishop and Ari Miles leading from the front this Cobras side should definitely be able to hold their own. Bottom age Academy players James Richardson, Zanna Stevenson and Trey Dummet will also be players to keep your eyes on this weekend.
The side will also be bolstered by Kane Haua, an academy player who will be coming back from an injury that saw him miss the last half of last year’s Grand Final. Kane is understandably hungrier than ever to get back out onto the footy field, get his hands on the footy and maybe even kick a couple goals in what will hopefully be a triumphant return for the young spear head. Kane has also been impressed with how well the team has come together saying ‘One of the biggest things for our team is that we live so far away from each other it can sometimes to be hard to gel as one unit, however this year we have really come together well and I’m really excited to see what this team can do’.
For anybody in the area, or those coming to watch the championships will be held at the home of the Whitsunday Eagles in Airlie Beach, the Capricornia fixture will be included below. On a final note it is really exciting for the Capricornia league that every club has a representative in this team. We wish the boys the best of luck. GO COBRAS!
