SHARPSHOOTER DJ VASILJEVIC JOINS THE VALLEY !

Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence standout scoring machine, and Australian representative, Dejan ‘DJ’ Vasiljevic is the latest signing for our Big V Basketball State Championship Men for season 2016.

A 6’2 Shooting guard, DJ comes to Diamond Valley with demonstrated long-running elite level performances at all levels statewide, nationwide and worldwide – even at such a young age. DJ was one of the hardest scorers to guard in the VJBL, went on to demonstrate that ability at Australian Junior Championships for Victoria and continued to grow and be a relied upon, clutch performer for the Centre of Excellence in the SEABL and Australia in FIBA World Championships.

‘Having Dejan play with this club is an amazing opportunity for our younger players to be around a proven, world class shooter’, Head Coach Alan McAughtry stated.

‘His rise through the Melbourne Tigers program, through to the CoE and to the world stage in both the U17 and U19 FIBA World Championships has been a credit to him and his coaches over the years, notably Nick Abdicevic’.

‘It’s going to be of great benefit to DJ to have him get to be around the likes of Greg Page, Tim Brook and the Reynolds boys on a regular basis to continue his development at Senior level.'

DJ played in the SEABL last season for Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence team and averaged 17 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game whilst shooting nearly 40% from the 3pt line. This included stellar efforts of 29 points and 5 rebounds against Ballarat, 28 points and 7 rebounds against Nunawading and 27 points and 3 rebounds against Bendigo.

He also participated in arguably the single greatest game in Australian Junior Championships history last year in the U20s tournament, doing his bit to help the Victorians get over the line against a talented Tasmanian lineup – that game can be viewed in it’s entirety here : http://bit.ly/1PNkibL

DJ also played in the most recent FIBA U17 World Championships for Men, winning a silver medal with the Australian team. In fact, it was his heroic 3 point basket with 2 seconds on the clock, scores tied at 81, in the qualifier against New Zealand that booked our nation a spot in the World Championships to begin with.

DJ was named in the ‘All Tournament Team’ at that FIBA U17 World Championships, and highlights from the tournament can be seen here : http://bit.ly/1N6X89w

‘My aim is to continue his development, along with our team, and have our team play finals basketball in 2016. I think it is a realistic view of what we are capable of – and DJ will certainly be a big part of our plans in achieving that’, McAughtry stated.

DVBA CEO, Ross Wignell offered ‘I love his competitive nature and will to win. DJ’s improvement through his Under 16 years was outstanding and he has continued to succeed. He is a great example of hard work paying off. For our Junior Eagles to watch how DJ approaches the game will be of major benefit to their development. I am very happy to have DJ onboard’.
