SNELL TO SOAR WITH THE EAGLES

Australian Opal at 3 Olympic Games, 1 Commonwealth Games and 2 FIBA World Championships. A worldly career that took her from humble beginnings in Mirboo North, South Gippsland to the Australian Institute of Sport, to the WNBL, to the WNBA, to the Euroleague and now … Diamond Valley.

A long-time staple member of the Australian Opals rotation for her leadership, basketball IQ and deadly 3pt shooting, Belinda Snell is a world class performer, true professional and has signed on to line up with our Big V State Championship Women for the remainder of the 2016 season.

Proof of her longevity at elite level, Snell competed in the WNBL this past season for the Bendigo Spirit and was the 12th leading scorer in the competition - averaging 15 points per game to go alongside 5.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists, shooting nearly 38% from the 3 and 96% from the FT line.

She has habitually been a winner everywhere she has been, and is one of the few athletes worldwide that can boast being an Olympic Silver medalist, FIBA World Championships Gold medalist, WNBL champion, Euroleague champion and WNBA champion.

And with that winning edge, she is taking her talents to Civic Drive.

‘I am very pleased to welcome Belinda to our Diamond Valley Eagles program. As you could imagine, the coaching staff and team are extremely excited to have her on board for the remainder of the season and are looking forward to her first hit out with us this weekend’, Head Coach Dee Butler said.

‘Not only will she bring incredible experience and maturity, her ability to score and turn games around will be a huge asset to our playing group – she’s a big time player and her contribution and leadership to the team already has been second to none’.

DVBA CEO Ross Wignell is looking forward to the example Belinda Snell will set for our Big V program, and the DV Basketball community at large, with her professionalism – ‘It’s pleasing to add a player to our program the caliber of Belinda Snell. Her experience will be on show in the way she prepares to play, the way she conducts herself around the team, and the manner in which she competes with a desire to win, doing so with poise and game sense.’

‘She will be a tremendous role model for our young athletes in the Diamond Valley Basketball community to study and model their behaviours after.’

Dee added, ‘I have known Belinda for 25 years and she is one of the most genuine and down to earth people I have met. Her experience playing in the WNBA, Europe and with the Australian Opals is a testament to her dedication and work ethic'.

'I am thrilled to have the opportunity to coach her at DV and support her on-going basketball journey. Belinda is a great role model for not only her teammates, but the junior players within the Association, and I sincerely encourage everyone to make the effort to attend our remaining games to see one of Australia’s most elite Basketballers’.

Belinda begins with our State Championship Women on the road this week, but will be in action at Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre next Sunday afternoon, May 29 at 1pm in our rivalry match against the Eltham Wildcats.

We look forward to seeing you there !
