The Mayor of the City of Canada Bay, Councillor Angelo Tsirekas, has agreed to accept the role of Patron of the CDSFA.

Councillor Tsirekas has been prominent in community affairs since 1995 when he was first elected to Council. Councillor Tsirekas has served three terms as Deputy Mayor and was elected Mayor of the City of Canada Bay in 2002 and again as popular elected Mayor in 2004, 2008 and 2012.

The City of Canada Bay falls within the footprint of the CDSFA and has local clubs such as Concord Junior Soccer Club, Inter Lions Football Club and Five Dock Football Club providing football at a community level.

The Russell Lea Soccer Club which is located in the Canada Bay Council also holds a unique role in the Canterbury & District Association as it is the only all-female club. It caters exclusively for girls and women’s teams operating out of Queen Elizabeth II Park at Concord. Councillor Tsirekas has been a strong supporter of Women’s football and has encouraged young girls and women to be involved in physical activity as part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

CDSFA Secretary, Joseph Kuchappan said: “Angelo Tsirekas is a popular and respected community leader. His commitment to the citizens in Canada Bay is well known. He leads a dynamic local government, and we are delighted he has agreed to become a Patron”.

Councillor Tsirekas commented: “I feel particularly privileged about being chosen to be a Patron of Canterbury & District Soccer Football Association as football is a sport I hold close to my heart.

A lot of my childhood memories are made up of playing football with my teammates and family. And even today I am a proud member of the Five Dock Fossils football team, although my form on the field may have differed slightly over the years.

Being Mayor of the City of Canada Bay has given me the opportunity to get involved with wonderful local clubs such as yours, and see just how much local sporting clubs contribute to the fabric of our local community.”

The CDSFA clubs have agreed it is important for civic leaders to be engaged with the Association, as Councils play a crucial role in working co-operatively with clubs to facilitate opportunities to play sport.

Having Councillor Tsirekas agree to be a Patron is an acknowledgement of the important function clubs play within local communities. The member clubs of the CDSFA cater for 13,500 players who participate in community football. Canada Bay Council has over 78,000 residents.
