Carlo Ianni - FNSW State Award - 2013

In 1983 Carlo Ianni together with some friends established the Majors Bay Soccer Club within the Canterbury & District Soccer Club. The Club remained known as Majors Bay Soccer Club until season 1995 when the Club re-badged itself as Inter-Lions Soccer Club.

Carlo has been an integral part of the Club since its birth and has been at the forefront of driving the Clubs growth over the last 30 years. Originally established as a club which catered primarily for All Age teams, Carlo led the club into a period where recruitment of junior players was a focus.

The new direction of dynamic recruitment of players also spurned a growth in the Club of players in the what is normally referred “minis” being the age group of infant school age children who were siblings of players within the club who attended primary school.

In time Carlo convinced the Club that it was only catering for part of the community in its geographic region. He spearheaded a new strategy to also target the recruitment of female players to spur the growth of the Club and to make it a club which was family orientated and encompassing all members of the family unit.

One of the next steps which Carlo took responsibility for was to provide teams for mature age competitions such as the introduction of over 35 and over 45 age groups. In fact the over 45 age group Champion of Champions in 2012 was taken out by the Inter Lions Club and the Inter Lions Club is also the Canterbury Associations representative in the 2013 over 45 Champion of Champions Competition.

Part of Carlo’s vision was to also provide an opportunity for aspiring players to have an opportunity to participate in external competitions to those conducted by the Canterbury Association. He’d observed that many of the talented players within the Club had been forced to leave the club to pursue opportunities afforded by other Clubs.

This led Carlo to convincing the Club to have senior adult teams in Football NSW Competitions which the Club entered under Carlo’s stewardship. As a natural progression this subsequent had Carlo seek to establish an internal pathway for male players within the Club applying for and gaining entry into the FNSW Youth League Competitions.

Carlo has always had a strong sense of equity and at the time of fighting to establish a pathway for male players, he did likewise with female players and the Club has established itself as a participating club in the FNSW Women’s League, which encompasses youth age groups for girls.

Carlo has also been a longstanding member of the CDSFA Council of Clubs as well as having and continuing to, serve on the Association Judiciary Committee. A position he has held continuously since 1997. Additionally, Carlo has also served on the Association Senior Grading Committee on and off for a number of years. Carlo was recognised for his service to the Association being a recipient of the Cec Barlow Award together with his wife Vicki.
