Tigers Women Come Through At Home

Southern Tigers (73) defeated Eastern Mavericks (55)

Southern Tiger's Women put their season back on track this week when they won their second game at home for the season defeating the Eastern Mavericks 73-55 on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks locked out the Tigers in the first quarter with a strong defensive first quarter leading 23-9 at the first break. With the Tigers struggling offensively, onlookers certainly wouldn’t have predicted what was to happen in the second quarter.

Leigh Scott’s women bolted out of the gates denying the Mavs points for almost the entire quarter, before Shannon Tarran managed to score Eastern’s first and only two points, 27 seconds before half time. Scoring 21-5 for the quarter, the Tigers stole the lead at the main break 30-28, turning the game completely on its head, and carrying it well into the third quarter.

The Mavericks dropped numerous opportunities, letting Shayde Quintrell and Denelle Fawcett out of the cage for the Tigers. The Tigers stretched their lead to 12 points at the final break, and then out to as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter, as Fawcett continued to show no mercy, finishing the game with 18 points and 8 rebounds.

Barber and Quintrell provided great support with 10 and 16 points respectively. But together they comprehensively tore up the glass, both finishing the game with 15 rebounds each.

Tarran (12 points, 12 rebounds), alongside Emma Hooley (13 points, 9 rebounds) and Amanda MacDermot (11 points), were again the best on court for the Mavericks, showing grit right through to the end.
