Tigers Men Set The Pace

Southern Tigers (96) defeated Eastern Mavericks (65)

A colossal win for the Tigers Men over the Eastern Mavericks on Sunday afternoon gives them a 3-0 start to the season, sharing the top of the table with the Sabres who are also undefeated.

A 17-3 opening run from the Tigers set the tempo for the game, as McDaniel and Smyth showed an aggressive attitude in offence early. The Mavericks managed to pull it back to 12 points at quarter time, and kept nudging their way back into the game in the second, bringing the score to 25-18. However, that was as close as it got for Eastern, as the Tigers took it back to 14 points at half time.

In very short time, McDaniel and the Tigers extended their lead to 22 as the tempo rose dramatically at the start of the third. Curtis Scipio gave Eastern some hope, dominating the scoreboard and putting them back in a reachable position at the final break, trailing by just 12 points.

It was short lived though, as Todd Davies sunk two consecutive 3-pointers to lead the Tigers into scoring 19-7 in the first 5 minutes of the fourth quarter. Samuel Johns helped stretch the lead out to 35 points eventually, but it was more than enough as the Tigers finished 31 points ahead at the final buzzer, winning 96-65.

Davies and Tim Smyth top scored for the Southern Tigers with 16 and 15 points respectively. Anthony Mathews played well for his 13-point contribution, as did Codey Ellison under the basket, bringing down 10 rebounds.

The two clear standouts for the Mavericks were Curtis Scipio with 19 points and his fellow guard Isaac Nyembo with 16 points.
