Sabres Men Overcome Mavs

Sturt Sabres (108) defeated Eastern Mavericks (78)

Sturt have jumped to fifth place on the back of a 30 point win against Eastern on Saturday night, 108 – 78.

After last fortnight’s lacklustre performance against Norwood, the long weekend clearly arrived just in time for the inconsistent Sabres.

Well rested, both teams came out firing, trading baskets for much of the first quarter, although Sturt threatened to pull away in the final minutes.

The Mavericks looked to negate the Sabres momentum with a few early baskets, but a three point onslaught from Sturts’ Jack Turnball and Jordan Heading saw the Sabres take control of the contest early in the second, racing out to a 27 point lead by the main break.

While the Mavericks were competitive at both ends of the floor, Sturt seemed to have jumped on the Spurs bandwagon; distributing a season high 20 assists in addition to their 108 points.

Sturt Coach Brett Maher was able to give star import Dexter Moore a well-earned break while showing what kind of depth he had at his disposal, as five separate players scored in double figures.

In just his second game back from a severe ankle injury, Sturt’s Dylan Rawson had no trouble finding his feet, scoring 15 points in just under a half of playing time.

Darcy Aistrope was a lone shining light for the Mavericks, leading all scorers with 17.

The win separates Sturt from South Adelaide and moves them into a clear fifth position; meanwhile the Mavericks remain last with just the one win for the season.
