OFF-SEASON: Have the Rockets found a new talisman?

By James Woit

After a disappointing bottom placed finish for usual finalists the North Adelaide Rockets men, a quick rebuild could be on the cards, with former varsity baller Aric Miller signing on for the red and white.

Miller most recently played for Armstrong State University in 2013, where he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Men’s Basketball All-America Team. His tally of 641 points (23.7 ppg) was the third most in a season in the history of Armstrong Basketball.

A 6-4 Guard, Miller was a non-selection in the 2013 NBA Draft. He is right-handed, strong off the dribble and has a high-arcing jump shot that allows him to shoot over outstretched defenders.

In other news, reigning men’s Champions Woodville have announced the signing of Ian Nixson from Shawnee State University. Nixson has the toughest job in basketball in 2015, replacing Alexander Starling, who won the Woollacott Medal and Grand Final MVP last season.

The West Adelaide Bearcats women have added some depth inside with the acquisition of former Norwood premiership winner Rachel Herrick. The Bearcats are looking to climb back into the postseason mix, after narrowly missing out in 2014. Glenn Shaw has been announced as the new Head Coach.

There have been further changes with the Norwood women, as Super-Coach Simon Pritchard has stepped down, allowing Jess Foley to move into Playing-Coach. Under Pritchard, the Flames have won the last four Minor Premierships and two of the last four flags, at one point winning 31 consecutive games. Foley has big shoes to fill, but her resume of a WNBA draft selection, National side representation, 253 WNBL games including WNBL championship and two-time Halls Medallists (amongst other things) suggests she is more than equipped for the job. Foley will be assisted by WNBL Life Member, Adelaide Lightning Championship coach Vicki Valk.
