Round Wrap: North Adelaide v Woodville

WOMEN: North Adelaide v Woodville

Hill, McKay lift Rockets to big win over Warriors

The North Adelaide Rockets put in a suffocating defensive effort against the Woodville Warriors as Jo Hill and Shannon McKay led the defending champions to a 71-37 victory at Hillcrest.

The Rockets set the tone of the game early, running at every opportunity, moving the ball effortlessly while completely clamping down on defence, giving up only two points in the final six minutes of the first quarter.

Hill started strong, scoring seven of her 20 points in the first. Her hoop and harm, leading to a three point play put the Rockets ahead by 11 with 3:31 left in the opening quarter. McKay (15 points) was perfect from long range in the first, her six points coming off two triples.

The Warriors found no answer in what was an extremely low scoring second quarter for both teams, Katherine Perkas (11 points) connected with 3:42 left in the half to break an eternal 10 minute scoring drought for Woodville.

Despite neither team troubling the scoreboard too much in the second, North Adelaide had the advantage over the Warriors due to their excellent execution in the first quarter. Woodville on the other hand, committed 15 turnovers in the first half as passes flew out of court and holding onto the ball became an increasing issue for the visitors.

The change of ends helped Woodville match the Rockets for a short time but simply holding position was a tough ask. Hill, McKay and Jamie-Lee Peris (nine points, seven rebounds) made sure the result was never in doubt.

The Rockets continuously looked inside for easy baskets. Whether it was Hill taking defenders off the dribble or pulling up for a mid-range jumper, or Peris giving the defense lots of trouble down low, North Adelaide did it all as a 19 point lead blew out to a 34 point win after a 27-12 final quarter.

MEN: North Adelaide v Woodville

Miller, Rockets too good for Warriors

The North Adelaide Rockets defeated the Woodville Warriors, 84-77, after a great team effort to come back from an 11 point deficit and a superb third quarter from Aric Miller, to give them the edge in a closely fought match.

The comeback for the Rockets was led by Thomas Rowe (14 points, seven rebounds) who scored eight points in the second quarter to give North Adelaide the momentum going into the major break. A fast break layup by Daniel Goodluck (11 points, five rebounds, four assists) cut the Warriors lead to one point with 3:13 left in the half.

Mitch Creek (28 points, 13 rebounds, four steals) steadied for Woodville when he finished over two defenders. Ian Nixson's (11 points, six rebounds, four assists) jumper to end the half gave the Warriors a slim four point lead.

Miller (22 points, five rebounds, five assists) scored half of his 22 points in the third quarter. He began by sinking a triple and gave North it's first lead since the first quarter. His second three of the quarter made it eight straight points for the Rockets' import.

Nixson's triple levelled the score with 4:25 remaining but three consecutive baskets from Luke Pike quickly jumped the Rockets lead out to eight. Warriors sharpshooter, Darren Ng, wasn't as damaging from his usual spots beyond the arc, but a timely mid-range shot, followed by a three brought Woodville to within three points.

However, Miller produced the shot of the game when he raced up the court with three seconds on the clock, pulled up on the left wing and splashed a triple to beat the third quarter buzzer.

The Rockets led by as many as 12 in the final quarter but through Creek, the Warriors cut that advantage in half. Woodville would get no closer however, unable to capitalise on a four minute scoring drought by the Rockets. North Adelaide's free throw shooting left something to be desired at the end of the game, but they made enough to seal the win.
